OT: Board Games

Any board game geeks out there?:clown:

My daughters (soon to be 10, 11, and 13 years old) and I have caught the bug. We've had 'Ticket to Ride' for the past year or so, and it's always a hit.

We recently picked up 'Small World' and 'Forbidden Island'. Both are also very popular around here. We've been playing nearly every night for the past several weeks.

I've got 'Settlers of Catan' coming next week, which I'm sure they'll enjoy. They loved going to Millennium Games in Rochester, and our wish list is much larger than time (and my wallet) will allow!

I love this quality time with the kids, and it's so much better (most nights) than vegging out in front of a movie.

Any active gamers out there? Do you have any recommendations for games? We've also been watching 'Tabletop' with Wil Wheaton, which has given us some ideas for our next game(s).

I dont know any games specifically but there is a new place in victor on 96 in the business district that is just board games. Might be worth a look.

the only game i ever got into was heroquest when i was younger. I think it was out in the early 90s. its a dungeon crawl using figurines. the board has a ton of 3d objects. i dont know if your girls will like it but its a blast

Settlers of Catan is fun. Games like Sequence and Cranium are always a hit in my household. I got my wife Wits & Wagers last year, which is a fun game when you have a group of people.

I'm a fan of munchkin. It's not a board game, it's a card game but... With the tag line of: kill the monsters "¢ steal the treasure "¢ stab your buddy it's a fun game to play.

I saw this played on Wil Wheaton's 'Tabletop' show. Looks like a fun, fairly quick (and potentially brutal!) game.

I am a huge fan of board games. I don't have any kids currently which is awesome but the ones I love playing with family and friends are, Settlers of Catan which you mentioned, Carcosonne, Smallworld is a big hit, Evo by Asmodee is one that I find funny. The key to fun board games for everyone is that you have to try and avoid direct conflict and still be competitive. Risk is fun if you are winning, when you aren't however it is the most boring game. Settlers, Carcosonne, Smallworld all work to correct that issue by giving each player something to do. IMHO the Germans make the best board games. Some of the expansions are fun but I generally stick with the plain ol' vanilla games.

I think that's great that you're playing board games with your girls! So much better quality time than video games. Our favorite games (kids are 8, 6, and 4):

Settlers of Catan
Forbidden Island (although it stresses out my 4yo to the point of crying sometimes)
We have Ticket to Ride, but it hasn't been played too much ( I think it's a little advanced for them)

A really good suggestion for you is a game called "Bang" Look it up on Amazon, and get the one that comes in the bullet shaped can that has all of the expansion packs. It works very well with three to 6 players. Perfect for older kids to adults. A little too involved for under 7 year olds maybe. I've tried it and it's the next one I'll be buying.

Don’t even know where to start. My Board game collection is way too large to list. They range from Vintage game form the 70’s Such as Which Witch, Hunted Mansion, Green Ghost, Sub search, Tanks, and Chopper Strike. Through the 80’s such as Dark Tower, Hero Quest, Dragon Slyer, Wiz War, and Battle Field, Into the 90’s with Nightmare, Atmosphere, and Zombies. To current ones such as House on Haunted Hill and Betrayal. And about a 100 more.

My daughter who is 10 likes Abstracts and the basics like Clue, 13 deadend Drive, Battle ship, Monopoly, Chess, Checkers, Othello, and Zombies. But now she is starting to like more strategic games. So we will see how this fall goes. During the summer to many other thing to do.

When Millennium was owned Crazy Egor’s (who moved to Hilton and only about a year ago close his store front and now sell on ebay) They had a used game exchange much like Video games do today. I don’t know of anyone in Rochester doing that anymore but I believe there was a store in Buff that still does.

One of the all time games the kids really big kick out of is Nightmare and Atmosphere. They use a Video host that you compete against. Good for friday and sat nights.

A very simple one and always a favorite is that is in republish is Wiz-War

Boardgamegeek is a great source for deterring a games quality and playability.

I worked for a time at Millennium. Good times, lots of games. Axis and Allies was a good one for board type. I ended up falling into Warhammer 40k and spent entire paychecks on plastic and metal.

Settlers of Catan and the sea farers expansion are awesome. If anyone in Buffalo plays, I'd be up for a game.

My neighbor has a great collection of games and I'll join them once in a while. He's got Zombicide, which is an absolute blast.

I didn't think they made GOOD board games anymore. I have to check out Settlers of Catan.

My wife and I get into heated battles of Sorry. The game is so simple but if you use the alternate rules it actually becomes fun, fast and brutal. The best part about Sorry is that one person could have three pieces in home and the other have three in start and in five moves the game can change and the person losing all of a sudden won. Basically, when the person you're playing with is horrible with strategy they still win 50% of the time.

Risk is awesome but as mentioned above, it's boring when you are losing. I lost once and I remember it sucking.

Settlers is great - doesn't take forever to play like Risk, and has a lot of interaction with the card trading. Works best with 3 or 4 people unless you have expansion packs and then 5 or 6 players is great.

well I mean theres tons. I work at Pair-A-Dice games at village gate. Theres the Star Wars games. theres axis and allies. numerous risk type games. settlers and any of its expansions. we are always getting new games in store. Theres deck builders which are alot of fun like DC Universe.
