OT: BOWHUNTERS, Beginner's Bow for target shooting??

Hey All,

Didn't want to resurrect the Bowhunting thread but I am looking for some advice. My 10 daughter whats to take up archery and it is her birthday this week. We wanted to get her a youth bow without spending a lot because she may shoot three arrows and never pick up the bow again. On the other hand we don't want to buy a toy from Wally World.

We saw a Genesis and a Genesis Mini for about $150 plus add ons would put it over $200. That is a bit more than we wanted to spend for a "if she likes it" thing.

Other possiblities are:

Martin Youth Tiger $50 or $90 for a kit.
Crosman Elkhorn Jr $60
Barnett Lil' Banssee $30

The Banshee has some good reviews but the price make me thing "toy"

Any help would be great.

If you get her junk, I think she'd be more likely to get bored. Just my $.02

Dave, do you think she will want to hunt? If the answer is yes then I would spend the money and get her a good set up. There are a few good bows that are adjustable from 15 to 50 lbs. and are lightweight. The cost may be a little more than you would want to spend but if she gets into hunting or just even target shooting that's a memory that you and your daughter will always have. jmo...

Depends on what sort of bow you're looking for. Compound, recurve, Longbow, stay well away from "starter" kits. If you're looking for recurve I can post a link later for a very solid bow that I use for teaching. Price is around $110 for the bow to door. Don't have the link on my phone unfortunately.

I've been an avid archer for 15 years. Plus I'm one of the masterminds behind Crosmans Web and Social Marketing department. Last year I bought my 9 year old daughter a few starter bows from Crosman to see if she would like it. I have the Elkhorn and the Sentinal. Both great starter bows for a beginner archer. They are not intimidating to a new archer and they are not gonna break the bank.

The Genesis is the next step bow for my daughter. The Elkhorn was a little hard for her to pull back last year. But I'm thinking she will not have any problems this year. But after she outgrows out of them I'll be starting my nephew out in a few years with these bows.

Just my cents.

I can prob get you a elkhorn if you have something to trade? Let me know.

I got my 10yo daughter a Bear Warrior 3 last fall. Nice enough for a starter bow. She loves it. I haven't found anything chintzy about it.

The best youth bow i have ever seen is the mathews mission. I bought 1 for my 13 year old and he shot 2 with it this past season. It is adjustable from 20lbs to 70lbs and draw length goes from 17in to 30. Very quiet and fast. Little expensive but will use it till he can buy his own. Price was 500.00 setup ready to hunt.

Our youth program uses genesis. Ny state champ (female) highly recommends them. My son shoots one sans add ons. High resale value should she chose to opt of archery. Traditional is also a lot of fun. Equipment can add up quickly with growing kids. A youth camp might be good fit. It should give the opportunity to try different styles without having to purchase. (Most are very low cost). Having someone besides mom or dad offer instruction can be "huge".

I've heard good things about Genesis. Lots of summer camps and schools use them.

Try to find a good archery store in your area. Not Gander Mountain or the like. A good archery store should really be able to put you two in the right direction. They may even let her try a couple out.

There is no need to spend lots of money. I still use my crappy Wal-Mart $250 setup that is 6 or 7 years old now. It has gotten a couple upgrades (drop away rest, string silencers). I've taken 3 deer with it. The only deer I ever missed were my fault. I can hit 6" circles from 40 yards with it.
