The 02 sensor will reset itself if it does not see a fault in 2 trips soif it goes of then comes back on you have a bad 02 sensor.
Huh?

transmission code

the computer is saying the first oxygen sensor is bad but the second one could be bad throwing off the first one

OBD2

OBD2

So, shouldn't I replace the first one to begin with? Would this be why the "check engine" light is coming on?

On OBD2 there is a thing called 2 trip logic If your computer see's a fault on the first trip it will set a pending code if it does not see it anymore then it forgets it. But if it see's it again on the 2nd trip it will set the light and that is where the staties maniter comes into play.
There are 2 many variable's on what consits of a trip that I wont even go there.

Just replace both o2's if you have never changed them, just like a battery they go bad. B1,S1&2 just means bank one meaning a particular side of the eng and if its a 4cyliner then you only have 1 bank. If its a v6 then you have a left bank and a righ bank meaning b1 or b2 . S1&s2 just means sensor 1 or sensor 2 .
replace both, clear the codes drive the car on the highway and around town to complete a drive cycle.
