OT: cicadas

Oddly enough, they smell like potatoes when pre-cooking (parboiled) -

They really don't have much of a taste - There's not much to them either - They're almost hollow inside!

The wontons rock!

The cicadas aren't the only creatures out in force here in Homewood. They've been followed by hundreds of seagulls. My wife and I woke up to a yard full of seagulls on Saturday morning, and they've been chowing on cicadas in our yard and all over town since.

Awesome fotos Yankee Reefer!! You Asians will eat anything!;)

Pam, unfortunately, I don't have any either.:( I live in an older part of town with lotsa trees but no luck. I went to my mom's yesterday and she has tons (she lives in a forested area of Palos Park) so I was able to get my Cicada Fix. Luckily, my nieces and nephew were visiting from Wisconsin so I was able to teach them all about the Cicada life cycle. They can now even distinguish which ones are boys and which ones are girls!

Here in Elmhurst, there are none around my house and neighbors houses. Go 3 blocks south and there are thousands!!! Very weird as many of the neighboring houses are older and I know the soil has not been disturbed for over 17 years.

That chili looks disgusting!!!!

Dare I ask how?! [/B][/QUOTE]

Pam-to determine the sex is very simple. grab them by the wings and turn them upside down. females have a oviposter on the lower abdomen (a vertical slit). males on the other hand, have something protruding at the end of the abdomen (aka small penile-like protrusion) that looks like a tail) btw-when you pick one up and they chirp, they are males

So I guess dinner at my place on the next short bus tour is suspect?

Cicadas will likely be gone, but we got lots of rabbits and squirrels in the neighborhood. Mmmmmmmm :D

It keeps getting worse each day!
The noise, the seagull's at first fun to look at, but now my car is multi colored!
The UPS guy was running back to his truck flailing his arms screaming like a little school girl

today at first appeared to be a good swimming day, 90 F
couldn't even get the pool cover off before I had about 15 cicadas on me

my dog won't eat dog food, just cicadas
and 1 fell in my coffee

when will it end

Fell in? How'd you get it to do that? I still have to dunk mine! :D

You need more beer in your coffee. If you have enough beer, they can only make 1 lap before falling in.

none in the city and I feel jipped

Ditto, I have not seen a one here either!

I drove by Schiller park Sunday and I could not believe the racket coming out of the forest preserve. I now feel fortunate that I live in a cicada free zone...
