OT: cicadas

I drove by Schiller park Sunday and I could not believe the racket coming out of the forest preserve. I now feel fortunate that I live in a cicada free zone...

Is shiller park just west of Crown plaza on River road? When I left the IMAC on Sunday, there was a lot of noise coming from thos woods on the north side of River road.

BTW, none out here in the stix either.

Rod
I have to drink out of a can right now so that I can cover the opening with my thumb

the stench of those dead cicadas is just to much
I'm thinking chicken left overs in a garbage can for a week in the hot sun

Rod, yes those are the same woods I'm talking about. It was crazy. I think I'd have to leave town if I had to put up with that all day.

I was in Park Ridge last weekend and the sound was deafening. I didn't see any of the bugs, just heard them everywhere. It was like every tree had a full concert sized speaker system shrilling at the same squeek. It was impressive for 15 minutes but I'm not sure how I would deal if it was going on for weeks.

I still feel jipped.

Me too, Pat. We have almost none here but I was working in Park ridge & there were a lot on the ground doing "it". The sound out there is amazing!

Actually Rod, the noise you heard coming from the woods was the secret rendevous of Pufferpunk and Aiko:eek1:

Here is a foto of a larva coming out of his shell:

17 years ago my husband and I caught alot of fish with them
this time around it's my husband and youngest daughter taking bags of them fishing
My daughter likes to feed them to bull frogs

My youngest daughter has discovered the value of the cicada
entertainment!
1.get a tennis racket and hit cicadas
2.catch a male and tap its head to the tune of any song

I was listening to Johnny B on WLUP Friday morning and he played some crazy funny cicada song that one of the listeners called in. I'd love to get a copy of it on MP3...
