Amazing shots! Care to share what filters you were using? Circ. Polarizer?

I was also wondering the same. It looks like there's some NG in there, too.

Frisco, those are spectacular shots. I'm definitely jealous. You make that lens look nice. :)

Thanks again, I had B+W UV and kaesemann circular polarizers on the lens and used the 24-70 all day, but keep in mind that I also processed in photoshop to one degree or another and the pics aren't raw straight out of the cam. I need to thank my friend Peter who organizes the trips and has been trying to teach me the basics.

Here are a couple more pics that I didn't upload yesterday:

A couple more from the drive back over Tioga Pass:

And a couple more from Bodie:

On those last 5:

1: Water's too still
2: Water's too soft
3: Too evenly lit
4: Too crisp
5: The building's roof is missing

:)
(Awesome shots, Frisco. Awesome)

Thanks for the info on your filters. Im just curious as to what type processing you had to do in photoshop? Obviously you had great material to start out with, but what did you apply to really make the pictures amazing?

Im just trying to learn a bit as we admire your work.

Thanks
Scott

I made small RAW adjustments to the gamma, sharpness, saturation, and exposure for all pics. I have a Cokin p-filter holder and some filters, but I didn't actually use a graduated ND filter or skylight filter for any of the pics and for some of the pics used the HDR function in CS2 to deal with the high dynamic range, tone mapping, and a couple minor level adjustments (auto contrast, luminosity). Some of the pics are pretty much right out of the cam with only the RAW adjustments listed above. Thanks again for all the nice words; we really had a good day and saw some beautiful areas, and I think it was the lighting and location more than my skills and am happy that I managed to get a couple nice pics out of it.

What time of day were you at Bodie? I'm planning a trip through Yosemite on Monday the 10th. My wife will probably want to stop and do some fishing along the Tioga Pass and then head out to Bodie late in the afternoon. I want to get out there when the light's the best. I'm thinking it's still light out around 8:00pm, but I'm not sure if the mountains to the West will be casting shadows much earlier than that.

On another note, it's a full moon on the 8th, so I'm hoping to try taking some photos on our way back through Yosemite using just the moonlight. I've never tried it before, but I like the idea of getting some shots of the lakes and such with just the moon lighting the scene.

You've taken some nice shots. I hope I can get some, too! :D

Hey Mike- if you do get up to the Bodie area there is a dirt road that goes west, from just south of Bridgeport- I think the road is called Green River rd. or something like that. Anyhow- follow that dirt road up into the aspens for some great meadow shots, especially if there are still Iris and Mule's Ears in bloom. Snow covered mountains in the background too. Great spot to camp out as well- under the aspens... I need a vacation :p
Just remembered- the East Walker River below Bridgeport Resevoir has some excellent fishing for big trout.

Mike - Great pics! We were at Bodie in the mid to late afternoon. The sign at Bodie said they close at 7PM, and you'll probably get sunset colors in the sky before that time but not have the opportunity to actually catch the sunset. I don't recall what time the sun started setting on the mountains at Bodie though unfortunately. We actually caught the last full moon rise at Mono Lake several weeks ago, and it was pretty nice because the moon rose at 8 and the sun set at 8:30.

They have special photgrapher only access for sunrise/sunset once a month if you guys are interested. You need to pay $30 and get a reservation, but there won't be any other tourists there at least. We are planning on going back in August or Sept and it would be great if we could meet up.

Thanks for the tip! Sounds like it might be worth finding. I took a quick look at a map and saw a road called Green Creek Road that goes west just south of Bridgeport. Can't tell if it's dirt, but it goes for several miles and then just stops. How far off the main highway do you think we'd have to go to get some good shots? I think my wife is game for the ride, but we're talking 4 or 5 hours minimum just to get to Bodie and I'm looking to stay out late over the Tioga Pass to get some shots using only the moonlight. I think I'll owe her a nice dinner, or two!

It was a dirt road last time I was there, which was a couple years ago. But it was in perfect condition- easily drivable even in a low clearance vehicle. As for how far you have to go- it'll be obvious :p There are nice views all along but the higher you go the more chance you'll have of finding flowers for foreground. My foggy memory says it's maybe 5 or 6 miles from 395.
You won't find views that are as dramatic as in Yosemite itself, but it's still very beautiful. One more tip- as you head back west from Bodie the light gets really pretty before it sinks completely behind the mountains- it's worth stopping along the way for shots looking at the Sierra Nevada range.
