OT: deep sea fishing experts

just rent what they have. if you don't go enough to spend 150 to 2500 on salt gear the boat will have some to rent. the only thing you should bring are a snak some cash for food beer and to get in on the big fish pot and an ice chest. if you fist alot i read some one said a penn good choice cheap and good quality. a good tirger rod maches preety well. but mostly just rent what they have. you said that you have use a bait cast befor so just be patant. i to have seen several spinning reels pop under heavy load so i would stay away from them. and remember that tuna fight. that is what make them fun to fish for. not to mention the tast. ok im going to grill my dinner now. oh ya good luck and have fun. if you are worried about sea sickness buy the pach and put one on the night befor and change it the morrning of. they are cheap and no one will make fun of you. or atleast they will make much less fun then if you were pucking.

Hey omeg, pm me your information and I'll put u on the list. Always looking for extra people for those long trips, especially with gas at 3.30 a gal.

Bpoc. make friends with a deckhand when you board, and not only will he cast for you he'll tell you exactly what to do to get that big fish... and don't forget to tip him well..

These guys are out there every day and know exactly where the fish are and what they are biting...

they arent catching anything big... I have caught plenty of yellowtail on spinning gear.. hell, on bass rod... of course, I probably fish more than BpOC ;)

I would have a nice 6ft rod with medium action and a spiinning rod with 10-12 lb test.. that should be plenty for what they are catching (mostly bass, maybe a halibut or sheephead)... important thing is to have the drag set right.

If you guys get into yellowtail, you would probably need something stronger, especially if they are the bigger 20+lb grade... I think the 8-12lbers you can bring in with the spinning rod no prob (at least I could ;)..... Just make sure your spinning real can handle 200-300yards of 12lb mono and you should be fine.

BTW, you will also need a 1day fishing license.

The problem with the spinning reels, even the baitrunner models, is that the bait does not swim as easily as with the convention baitcasters.

90 % of fishing is PRESENTATION, and if the bait is not swimming naturally, the fish will usually ignore it, thinking there is something wrong with it.

Spinning reels do not let the line come off in an even fashion, even with the baitrunner feature.

My preference for yellowtail is the shimano torium, or calcuttas, but I have caught many yellows on my penn reels, I also had an old diawa sea line that was awesome for casting and magic on the yellows until the day that I hit a 10 foot swell on the back of catalina, whole boat went sideways along with me and my 2 passengers, and unfortunately I stepped on the reel bending the shaft and breaking the handle...

Then I bought the torium, and it works just as well.

10-12 lb test will work for bass, but those barries will slice through that with thier teeth, unless you use a wire leader.... 20lb minumum to have any chance to take a barrie.

and then there is the old what if... there are big halibut out there... a 20 lb halibut will break 10-12 lb line easy... and they are not line shy. The problem isnt bringing them up, that is the easy part .. once they see you and the gaff, and if someone misses the gaff 10-12 lb test is snapped...

Possibly rent 2 poles... a 10-12 lb outfit, and then a 20 lb, but then sand bass will bite 20 lb no problem... even calicos...

have fun

franky how do you tip a deckhand and how much >? do you tip them after the trip or when its all done?

what I would do, is slip him a 10 spot in the beginning to take care of you, and if he does well for the day, not including fish cleaning, tip him another 10 spot at the end of the day. Or if you are really happy, give him 20...

I just got back from a 2 day outta san diego. I caught a 17lb and 24lb albacore, a 28lb BLUE FIN! , 6 yellow tail from 12lb-23lbs. And a crapload more that didnt make it on the boat.

I made sashimi/sushi outta the blue fin and albacore. BEST IVE EVER HAD!

BTW, I would tip 20 or more. If you ever go again they will remember you and take care of you.

jjb81, hopefully those blue and yellow fins come up to catalina waters with the warmer days ahead.

the 2 days took you to mexico water there, which is lots warmer.

i had a lot of fun ...it was hotttttt....even with the sunblock on i still got burnt. now i know why fisherman wear hats i feel like i rammed my head into a wall.all i caught was two calicos one was under 12in so they threw it back. it was slow on the whole boat no one caught any yellowtail or tuna or albacore or anything other than a sand bass. i tipped well and i even got a few beers free from the deckhands. i also bought two conventional setups the day before the trip so now i'm ready to go out again but it'll have to wait for a couple of weeks cus i'm going to vegas next weekend.
Once again thanks to everyone who helped me out with your tips i really do appreciate it.
