OT Drill press opinions

I need to get a drill press for a few projects I am working on. I am looking at 10" models that will sit on my work bench. I have narrowed it down to 2.

A Ryobi DP101 from Home Depot 99.00. Direct link does not work. Sku 220416

or a Craftsman 21900 from Sears 119.00, it was 99.00 though a few days ago. Maybe went of sale.

I will mention that Delta makes a 10 inch model but it is not on any websites, lowes or Home Depot and I no longer see it on the Delta website, perhaps it is discontinued.

So let me know some opinions on these. I think both are fairly similar. I will be doing lgiht drilling, wood, leather, and acyrlic. Maybe some very light metals, nothing more that 14 gauge.

I have to agree with MayoBoy, no Crapsman stuff with plugs. I haven't looked closely at the Rigid line of drill presses but I sure do like the rest of thier stuff. Might want to check it before you make your decision. Most of the Rigid stuff comes with a lifetime warranty too. Just a thought for you.

I couldn't find a bench model from Rigid on the Home Depot site so, looks Ryobi is the best bang for the buck.

curious as to why people don't like the craftsman power tools? Most of their other stuff is fairly good I think. My mower is a craftsman, of course it has a briggs and stratton engine lol.

Anyone have this Ryobi model? I ahve read some people have had issues with the motor either being dead or failing quickly. Also I have heard comments about a high "run out" which I am not sure what that is. Maybe wobble off the center I guess?

Thats funny MayoBoy, I was just looking at the same thing. Harbor freight had the 5spd on sale last month for only $39.95 - reg price 69.99. I have found that if you take the add and talk to the manger, they will usually still honor the sale price, long after the sale is over too. He has "made" me buy the extended warr, like 5 bucks or so, if he honors the price but it's still worth doing it that way.

I have looked at harbor freight. While I find they have cheap tools you can get what you pay for. I do not mind spending a bit extra to get a better quality power tool, now a hammer for 2.99 that will just rock. But something spinning very fast near my hands? I think I will pay a few extra bucks.

Lon project wise I am talking general light duty stuff. Some acrylic holes and maybe some sanding with a drum attachment. I have a project where I need to drill some holes in leather. Would not be very tough. As I said maybe some light metal stuff, alluminum or steel but nothign larger than 14 gauge I would imagine. MAybe drill out some rivets too.

Chicken! You don't need all those fingers anyway! Save a few bucks. I do fine with only 9 1/2 fingers, you can too.

well there is a stunning advertisement for cheap power tools. "Ole 9 finger Jimmy says it be a great tool, come git ya'll some. Losing a finga' don't hurt dat much." I did buy a ball peen hammer set from Harbor that was super cheap and works great. I need an anvil eventually and I will get that from them too, only like 30 bucks for a 55 pound one. Cheap cheap fun fun.

I would'nt discount what Rob has to say Scott.

I hear he carved his wooden leg with a set of chisels that he picked up at K-Mart and he even walks on it ....sometimes!:D

Honestly some of the stuff there is good, some isn't. I buy the clamps there all the time when they are on sale. They work fine for the price. I also have a few small brad and staple nailers that work great. I bought the framing nailer and it is a peice of junk.

Only walk on it in good weather though, Don't wanna get it wet and warp it! (carved outta an old pallet).

Now that's what I call TALENT!:D

yeah I had never heard of harbor so a buddy of mine told me about them. He said they are cheap enough that if they last your project you have done good lol. Hand tools I would head there first but for power stuff I want to go with a little more piece of mind lol.

SO it seems everyone like the ryobi more than the craftsman?

hmm the reviews are nice. Stil lmakes me nervous lol. I may have to head over there and check them out before I make a decision.

I would. I have the real big dust collector from HF too. Seems pretty solid. But, If we can't get you to save a few bucks, go Ryobi way.

lol As I said I am more worried about losing my fingers than cash. I have some hammers from HF. I will try to swing by and check them out. Maybe if it looks good I will get the drill AND the anvil this check instead of just the drill. Talk about savings lol.
