IM gonna go fishing off the shore of the missouri today

Im not trying to catch tonight's dinner, just going for recreation

what is good tackle for a fast moving large river?

are there pretty much only catfish in it?

PS: in ND you can get a fishing license at any gas station or walmart, is it the same here?

Walmart is your best bet, but i am not 100% positive.

I wish I was fishing today..........I suppose your going to have some beer as well......double grrrrr

Where are you going Leighton? If you're going to a state park most of them sell licenses there, otherwise I think gas stations around that area sell them, never heard of getting one at WalMart but that doesn't mean they don't have them! As far as tackle goes, rooster tails in general seem to work well especially for bass. Minnows and worms also work but I know that not all places allow you to use minnows. Good luck fishing!

Edit: just saw your catfish question. I personally have never caught a catfish in any of the rivers I've fished in. Cats don't particularly like fast moving water so they'll tend to stick to deep holes and such. You'll likely catch bass (both large and smallmouth but mostly small), sunfish, and crappie.

Yea there's catfish. They caught this one last year in the Mississippi here in St. Louis.

Don't fall in!

You can get a fishing license on line.

I've only fished the missouri a few times and I've only seen junk fish like carp, drum, and an occasional catfish be caught. I had no luck on lures. I actually read an article a year or two ago that said the Missouri river is one of the worst places to fish in the area. I've seen nothing to make me think otherwise.

Catfish are actually very common in the big rivers around here. When I go to the mississippi that's what I see most people catching along with other junk fish. I know the Kaskaskia has lots of cats too and I've had some luck on catfish on the Illinois.

IME, around here in the big rivers live bait for those junk fish is your best bet from shore.

6 inch gulp worms.
at least in the spring, Pumpkin seed was working great for bass in the lake.
but rooster tails are can't fail.
unless they fail...

Missouri and Mississippi are both good for catfishing...best time being during the night though. I usually use 20+lb test line and decent sized rods/reels...bait can be shrimp, liver, leeches, nightcrawlers, stinky meat, dough ball stuff in low flow waters, etc.

Daytime fishing will yield just about anything from turtles to gar to carp to sturgeon....all depends on where you are fishing. My favorite place to fish is off the ends of wingdikes at night using small fish like bluegill for bait...that is how to catch the big blue cats and flatheads. Let me know if you want to go sometime.

And how come you haven't told howie about your propensity for fishing big cats?!?

yeah, were just going for fun, and not intending on consuming anything, unless we get some good bass or something

we're going to the river by that park on 94, I dont remember what its called, but its right off of 94 just south of highway 40

nook, that sounds pretty sweet, Ive never really been catfishing before, so I dont have equipment, but like most other things, you can never have too many rods/reels/lures, so I woudlnt be opposed to picking up a more heavy duty pole and line

the portion of the missouri river that is in ND is dammed into a huge lake, so we fished for walleye, etc up there...even though it was technially still the missouri river, it was pretty much a lake

back in montana where I used to live before ND we had the yellowstone and the missouri, but most of the fishing on those was for walleye and paddlefish

even more off topic, I bought some catfish at the grocery store since I have never eaten in before.....do I just cook/season it like regular fish?

my .02... Busch Wildlife for a relaxing afternoon. Several lakes and a lot less work than river fishing. Catfish can usually be had in the late afternoons and evenings. Bass, crappie, bluegill (all generally tiny).

I went fishing yesterday at Port Hudson lake in Gasconade/Franklin county.
It has crappy shore fishing but if you had a little boat the bass fishing would be killer.

I would not eat anything out of the Mississippi until the human race is long dead and gone. A couple eons of rain several million generations of fish, then you will have some good eatin !

Leighton - If you want to do some night fishing let me know.
Or for anyone else for that matter.

well the place we were at was Klondike park

within 30 seconds of my first cast (this is actually true) I had a bite, this is the whopper

after I caught that I thought the day would be filled with frequent fish catching fun

that was the only fish I caught all day...couldnt believe it....I catch one within 30 seconds of starting and then get skunked...unreal

so that busch place is pretty cool you guys say? is that on the same highway (94)?

Yep. About 2 miles south of hwy 40 off 94. About 3 dozen lakes to choose from. I think jon boats are free but you have to suppy your own battery and trolling motor (or use oars.. I think they still supply them). It's changed alot since I was younger. You should check it out sometime if you get a chance.

BTW... did we eat our catch?
