OT:Found and injured Hawk or falcon

So I was watching tv when my dad called me outside and asked me to help him. Something had grabed its finger and would not let go. Well as you can see the Hawk had grabed his finger with its talons. I was hard for me to get them out. Now I guess something had happend to it cuase when I let it go it would just fall and could not fly. I need to know what I can do to help it out and need the number to a place to take it to. I think one of its wings is broken and I dont want it to die. So can any one help me and this injured bird out. Thanks in advance.

There's a south coast bird rescue group that we've taken a similarly injured dove to once before - let me ask my wife if she knows the name/contact info.
 
hey thanks do you think the zoo might take it. There is a zoo local in my city not sure if its capable of carring for it.
 
thanks for the info but I think I will try my local zoo instead and see if they can help me find a place better suited other then someonce garage.
 
Of course, you're free to do as you choose, but I wouldn't discount that group just because they work out of their homes. That's much like saying you wouldn't take a sick fish to someone's home because they had a garage full of tanks - anyone who puts that much time and effort (and space) into something to rescue animals may very well know what they're doing.
 
I am sure the Santa Ana Zoo would be able to help you. If they can't help you directly, I'm sure they can put you in touch with someone.
 
Silverarrow why would you say such a thing. We have rescued several birds, from baby humming birds to stilts and all lived.

Hey Steve what do you think I should do? I will start calling place tomorrow morning and see what I can find out. I realy dont want this bird to die. Its such a awsome looking one too. Well I hope I can find a place for it.
 
A fried of the family found a red tailed hawk sitting on the side of the road, it just let him walk up and pick it up - he stuck it in his care and took it to the humane society - they know the right people to call, or call your conservation dept - they will take it for you too. Keep in mind that you should not keep this bird, but turn him over to the authorities - you could get wacked with some hefty fines if they catch you with the bird. I got fined $250 for saving a baby mallard from Dennis the Menis Park in Monterey when my neighbors complained many years ago. Poor thing was in the middle of the road and no momma duck to be found...
 
well I dont think I want to keep him I have no place to put it at. Not only that but its a wild animal. My dad can tell you how wild. The bird had his talons about 3/8" deep in his finger and that was all 4 of them. I had to almost pry them off. Right now he is asleep in a med dog carring cage. If I can get them to take him, I will call the local animal shelter and see if they know who can take care of it. Well thanks for all the help and will let you guys know what happens. Thanks

can you post some pics mario? Hawks are awesome birds, glad your doing the right by finding a place that can take proper care of it. I'm sure the santa ana zoo can definitely help out with that.
 
I wouldn't take that bird anywhere near the animal shelter, especially not OC's. They do not do wildlife and are overwhelemed as it is; I think the bird would be forgotten.

It sounds like you have everything well under control and the bird is safe. Hopefully one of those hotline numbers will be able to give you a safe place to take him to.
 
It's illegal to keep him unless you're a licensed falconer, at least in places I'm familiar with. He needs to go to a licensed raptor rehab person, and can be helped. Call your fish and game people: they should know who the rehabbers are in your area. Meanwhile he can eat [clean] chicken and might appreciate a cup of water.

I had one when I was in high school. Didn't know any better, similar story, I rescued him from cats, from under a bush. He was preflight, and I taught him to fly. Never figured out how he ended up under a juniper bush in the middle of the 'burbs. He ended up with a falconer, and got the care he needed.
 
well I just wanted to give all of you an update. Afther calling for animal rescue place and even the local expert of bird of prey they all reffered me to call my local animal control center. So that is what I did and from what the person who stopped by this was the third one they she picked up today. Seems to be alot of them are out and getting injured. Well all I can do is hope it gets well taken care of. Here is a picture for does that wated one. Its going afther the camera.
