Who's read it?

I just started. I'm still under 50 pages into it, and have had to consult the "glossary" multiple times.

This looks like it's going to be a good one!

Keep us posted how it is :)
Haven't read it, but running low on books for the summer - so... if it's good I'll add it to my list!

the dune series is awesome, the books just get more and more complex, the first one is pretty easy to read tho... just don't waste your time with the new ones by herbert's son, they're terrible!!

Just read the first one and it was very good. I tried to watch the movie and it was awful, definitely Mystery Science Theater material.

Dune?

Dune?

holy smokes.... what year did that come out?

I think I read it like 30 years ago. I was sooo excited about the movie and it sucked... but the books are great.

Original copyright: 1965.

I wasn't even a glimmer in my old man's eye!

This book is going to put a dent in some of my RC time!

So - I just looked this up on amazon. There are tons of books - is the first one just plain "Dune"? Is the order listed anywhere? I'm one of those people that has to read my books in order.....

fessin' up:

fessin' up:

*I had to look up the order as I couldn't remember it*

Herbert wrote five sequels to the novel Dune: Dune Messiah, Children of Dune, God Emperor of Dune, Heretics of Dune, and Chapterhouse: Dune. The first novel also inspired a 1984 film adaptation by David Lynch

Yeah, just plain "Dune" is the one to start with. So, are sequels worth reading?

The sad part about the movie is that it could have been decent without all the really bad special effects if they had stuck to the story and the character development.

totally agree with you Dan about the movie. There is a remake in the works...and especially with today's technology and CGI (hopefully ILM will have a chunk of this), they should be able to concentrate on character depth and not trying to wow the audience with cheesy SFX.

Finished her up last night, and I have to say that it definitely ranks in my personal top ten. I placed 'Dune: Messiah' on hold at the library, and it should arrive in the next day or two.

A lot of the reviews that I read said that the ending seemed a bit rushed, and I agree somewhat. I think that most folks want the story to go on forever, so regardless of how Herbert ended the novel, it would seem rushed!

I really liked 'The Hobbit' and the 'Lord of the Rings' trilogy, but I liked Dune better.

I highly recommend this one.

Oh dear. I (having been inspired by this thread :) ) just finished the book tonight and am feeling a bit disappointed. I'm going to have to rate this book "okay." In my opinion, it doesn't touch Lord of the Rings. But.... at the same time, I don't regret having read it. I think I put it in the same category as that Pullman trilogy that was popular a few years back.

That being said... I might go out and read the next one any way. I've run out of other books :) :)

*disclaimer - please don't put a rude tone to these comments - just voicing a different opinion*

Lizz...i'm trying really really hard to find a series of books that i have that you might enjoy. I believe they were written by Anne McCaffrey. I know I have four books that kept me flippin' pages. If you like dragons....this was one of the best series i have ever read. (aside from Star Wars and Lord of the Rings...okay, okay...Chronicles of Narnia is right up there too.) Sci-Fi wise...I've another book, Titan...which is fascinating.
