OT: Gas Prices!!!

I wonder if you guys realise how powerfull these people are?
Why do you think the good old Prez is taking the public hits on the high gas prices yet does nothing?

They have a lot of money and influence. But if you're a research company, why would you sell a breakthrough idea? The money they offer you is nothing compared to being the sole owner of a breakthrough technology. What can the president really do? It's a free market. People are willing to pay, they're willing to charge.

I too have a dodge deisel and mines the dually so its a real gas hog takes like $100 to fill up at the station. I myself am going to start making biodeisel in my garage for about .90 a gallon. Its an investment of about 5 grand for the machine with all the bells and whistles but it pays itself off in less than six months at current gas prices for me and I only go through a tank every two weeks. Anyone actually using their deisel as an everyday driver should look into bio-deisel. It takes a little chemistry but for us we are already used to using test strips, drip kits and the like for our reef tanks so its not a far jump and not hard to understand at all.

How do you figure it would pay off in 6 months? If it takes you $100 to fill up now, and it costs about 90 cents a gallon to make.. let's say diesal is $3.60/gallon, that would cost you about $25 to make the biodiesal or a savings of $75 per fill up. At $5,000 initial investment, it would take ~66 fillups or 33 months or close to 3 years to break even. Is my math off? Sounds like a good idea if you can start selling it to your neighbors though.

Assuming a 29 gallon tank at $3.50/gallon and a perfect 4 week month:

6 months x 2 fill-ups/mo @ $101.50 = $1218
6 months x 2 fill-ups/mo @ $26.10 = $313.20

So, I don't get the math either. But for a typical LA driver of a gas hog filling up TWICE a week:

6 months x 8 fill-ups/mo @ $101.50 = $4872.00
6 months x 8 fill-ups/mo @ $26.10 = $1252.80

Nice savings! Still not paying for itself yet, but I suspect gas prices will be much higher in that six month period, so you might catch up.

I would just quit if I had to fill up twice a week. What do you need to make biodiesal? Is it just used cooking oil?

"Why would they sell Breakthrough Ideas?"

Simple they get to people before they have breakthroughs. They monitor research that is happening in the energy fields and buy out the company or hire the top engineers if the work looks promising. People keep thinking that someone is going to be working in there garage and Mix 2 bottles of household chemicals together and make the magic energy pill. In reality it's going to be years of hard work and millions of dollars spent.

"What can the president do?"

He could start off by removing all those tax breaks oil companies get, he could shift the research money to people who actually want to find alternative energy, He could stop hugging and kissing the Saudi's after they just finished ripping America a New one ;)
He could create a 1 Billion Dollar E-Prize competition like the X-Prize, open it to all countries, Individuals and companies, first one to create an alternative fuel source that meets all the criteria gets 1 Billion Dollars. That's like the cost of 2 stealth bombers but would save the country billions later on.
