to take teenage kids. Somewhere in the Northeast (driving distance). We would like to take the kids on vacation this summer but somewhere different than the usual amusement parks.

Anyone have suggestions?!?

We did Cape Cod last summer. Did the trick. Tons of alternative spots within driving distance of the Cape. Lots of seafood and beaches. Not sure what you're looking for, but it was very relaxing for us, and we had a 9 month old in tow.

Mount Tremblant in North of Montreal has plenty of hiking and biking. Canadian dollar is about even with us now. Nice accomodations. I've been there in winter and the resort village is really nice.

Just a few ideas, in different directions. Perhaps it'll lead you to something you'll all like.

Just my suggestions:

Ohio is really close and there is a ton of stuff to do there depending on what your looking for. Rock n Roll hall of fame, Numerous Zoos and Aquariums around the state, Water Parks, & Cedar Point Amusement park.

"Driving distance", how far to you want to go?
Maryland and North Carolina are not really that far if you have time to stay a few days.

Out of the 2 areas I'd recommend Outer banks North Carolina (especially relaxing in the right spot) Plenty of beach, fishing and tourist sites.

OR Ocean City Maryland. Great Beaches and activities, para sailing, Fishing charter, amusement parks along the boardwalk and elsewhere. The kind of element teenagers like "cruising". Maryland is also in very close distance to Washington, DC. DC has a plethora of the nations best museums to visit and most of them are entirely FREE of charge. Many of them- you could spend a whole day or more in just seeing one or two.
A trip to that area you can really mix it up with the excitement of the nations capital and the summer beach vacation everyone enjoys.

Don't know how old your kids are, but if they're the adventurous type, perhaps some hiking and/or white water rafting in the Adirondacks?

Kids are 14 and 15. We are considering the Adirondacks. Ocean City Maryland sounds like fun, I'm definitely gonna check that out.

Thanks for the ideas. Keep 'em coming!!

we did dc/baltimore last year , lots to do at any price point. montreal feels like europe ,but speaking english isn't a problem. about 6 hrs either way. this year it's bar harbor ME in the fall. ocean city is more of a drinking /bar scene. assateague island has the wild horses. dr mac's is eastern shore md.

DC would be a great choice..Dont do Cape Cod or anything with them that young,we did a family vacation there when I was a young teen and wanted to slit my wrists by the 7th day lol.. More of an adult destination.

I agree, if we're talking about "outside of new york" - DC is awesome.

Ocean City NJ (Cap Cod) is awesome; had a blast there.

My vote is for Canada. Wife and I wanted a low key get away last year and ended up going to Montreal. An easy day drive brings you to a different country with a different language and lots to do and see.
