OT: I can't get my wifes imac to pick up my netgear router...

...She just got an ibook last night but for some reason it will not accept the wireless router. It will identify it, but then nothing once the password is put in.

She is getting really frustrated and I have no clue what I am doing. I got my HP a few months back and I have no idea what things are private, shared, or saved.

I know there are a lot of computer gurus here on MARS. Can someone please help me? All I want to do is watch my new TV and seach RC today; please help. Thanks

To try and diagnose this on a forum is virtually impossible with all the combinations that "could" be causing problems.
I might be able to come over on Tuesday and look at it for ya.

Geting wireless networks to stay working is hard enough but adding a Mac to the mix even gets more complicated.

That is the reason I bought an air port extreme when shauna got her macbook. Costs more...but it just works. Are you sure the wireless router is working?

Maybe if you have any security settings enabled it may not be compatible with the mac protocols...?

my iMAC had no problem finding and connecting to my wired and wireless networks. It saw my MS PC's when my PC's could not see my MAC. make sure you are set to DHCP and you have the correct key for your wireless router and you should be okay.

Thanks guys. I do know that the wireless router is working as I am on my laptop. Oh well, I was hoping that is was something simple, but there are too many possiblities to troubleshoot over the phone or through emails. I am having a friend come over Tuesday night to take a look at it.

Ahhh thats bull.... lol


Its easy, usually its wrong password length when you use a Mac with a PC based router.

If your using WEP security..... DONT... its old and outdated and It could be cracked in mere minutes..... Use WPA/WPA2 security with atleast 8 digits.

If you must use WEP, then if you are using WEP64 bit use a 5 character password or 10 digit hex. If your using 128bit then use a 13 character password or 26 digit HEX.


But go with WPA, it saves you headaches.

When I get calls about this, thats the first thing I check is the password length.


I have a netgear router and a Emac and I am using security.

So they work together


Are you using Security on the router? ya know?

Would that be through Mcaffe? I know I have private settings which cause a password to be prompted on her computer or my iphone. It is saved in my computer so it automatically connects.

mcaffee is for virus, the security I was talking about was for the wireless internet.


Since I have a netgear I could walk you through it..... If you want, PM your # And I can see if I can walk you through the router to look at the security.
