OT: I think my laptop has a virus!

Hey all,

Earlier today I decided to download bittorrent and now have LOTS of problems with my laptop. I can only open my computer with safe mode on and errors of safety alerts are popping up and my mcafee security looks to be not working well because it says everything is not protected. I did a virus scan but it said nothing found. Please help.

Thanks

Matthew

do a system restore take it back a day and it will reboot and problem solved

start
run
msconfig
when it comes up choose the tools tab
choose system restore in the list and choose launch
pick a date and restore when it reboots any changes made after that date to the system files will be erased hence removing the changes the bit torrent made to your system

AVG antivirus is free and easy to use, probably in safe mode as well. Who knows whether it is a virus, a windows blip, or a hardware fault. Sometimes it's hard to tell if not impossible.

The main problem is that mcafee said an unknown prgram is trying to connect to the Internet and I thought it was bittorent but maybe it was a virus or something. I am going to try the restore but all the 2010 vista security alerts are popping up, saying I have a Trojan.

Hopefully the restore to a previous day works.

Thanks for the help

Matthew

Computer is working like normal after the restore but my mcafee antivirus is showing "action required" and "not protected" but when I go to fix these they say error has occurred..

Something is still wrong but I appreciate all the help.

Thank you mrx66699! I think the restore worked out great. I think the program just made everything appear to be messed up because once the computer was restored it said everything was fine. I am doing another virus scan and appears nothing is going to be found.

Thanks again for the help all,

-Matthew

I use something called VIPRE, by sunbelt securities. It has always worked well for me, and well review on all the software reviewers. Works in the background unlike McaFEE, does not bog up your computer. It has a 30 day free trial.

Mcafee= BS norton = bs
I currently run avira after one of those episodes.
BTW run a malaware bites to look for other possible problems.

i use ms security essentials, i think nortons plants the virus in your comp once it expires so you pay for it to remove nothing.

I like kaspersky. Avira is not bad but I believe you get popups everyday on the free version.

http://www.kaspersky.com/

This is what I run on the my BootCamp partition running Windoze 7 :spin2: on my mac :)

On our other pcs I run Avira, adaware, spybot and windows defender. Really the key to any antivirus software is to actually run scans and frequent updates.

Ding, I can gotoassist into your PC and troubleshoot it if you want for free, I work in IT and we have all the remote tools here for our helpdesk.... let me know if your interested I don't mind helping out for free...

No prob Matt, its the easiest thing to do in that situation if you are not a computer technician or want to take the time to corner the exact cause of the instance. Very rarely nowadays is it actually a virus, more than likely its spyware, malware, or adware that causes 85% of computer issues.

I really appreciate it but I think I'm okay now. :)
