OT: Lego Mosaic

hollback

Team RC
Every year we struggle with Christmas gifts for my parents. We usually end up making them something since they are impossible to buy for. This year we my kids and I created a Lego mosaic picture for them. It turned out awesome. Up close it is really hard to tell what is going on. From a distance it looks exactly like them. The farther you move from the monitor the clearer the image. at about 30 feet it looks like a photo.

Enjoy!

Thanks Porky!

Ken,
I used Photoshop and cropped the image to 64 pixels x 32 pixels. Then each pixel equaled 1 Lego block. I then set selective colors based on the available Lego block colors. I then determined how many of each color brick I needed and ordered them from a Lego community much like our RC. I made a print out to size for the kids to use as a guide. It worked just like a "paint by numbers" and was easy for them to do.

Awesome Jason. If you stand a distance away from the computer screen you can really see the picture.

Wow, thats really cool. A true gift from the heart. Not to mention, someone has way too much time on their hands.

Amazing.

What size did it end up being???

It's 20" wide x 10" high. I wanted to make it much bigger but Legos are SO expensive. This was about $130 to make and I bought the Legos from a cheap, secret source. If I would have bought them from Lego, it would have been about $250!

Secret cheap source - wish I had one. The kids love legos and Jason is exactly right they are not cheap... Almost as expensive as a salt tank. A trip to the Easton lego store you can spend more than a couple of nice colonies would cost...

Legos rule :bounce3: Kids can't play with mine, they have to get their own! They're fascinated with megablocks right now

Very cool idea Jason!

+1 for Legos. Nice work on the mosaic! Starting to amass them for my son when he gets old enough to use them. On their last trip, my parents brought the box-o-legos from when I was a kid so I'm gonna build on that. If you can ever spill the beans on your hookup, please put me on the list.

Thanks everyone. It's really not a secret source. bricklink.com is where I ordered the individual blocks I need from. It's just a big community of people selling EVERYTHING Lego related.
