OT: My dog is hurt

My dog barely moves in the morning when he wakes up but by the afternoon he seems fine, jumping, playing, etc. This has happened for the last 2 days now. So I took him to the vet today and found out he has a herniated disk. It will heal but he needs to rest for a month, including no stairs for 10 days. I live on the 3rd floor in a condo and the dog won't let me pick him up, he is about 40 lbs. but refuses to be picked up. I'll probably do more harm by trying to pick him up, with all the stress and him trying to wiggle out of my arms. Anyone have any ideas to get him up and down the stairs? I was thinking of either getting a crate to carry him up and down the stairs for 10 days or trying to make something that will go on my deck for him to go to the bathroom on. Anyone have any ideas for my dog? I feel really bad for him and I don't want to have him walk up and down the stairs and prolong his recovery.

There is this trainning pad that people use for puppy's u could try they sell them at petsmart. Its a big pad that u lay on the floor for them to go to the bathroom on. After they do their business u just wrap it up and through it out.

Sorry to hear it.

How about ramps? If the stairs aren't too steep you can lay those long ramps they sell at Petsmart.

I have one you can borrow until he gets better, I think it's about 5 foot but pretty heavy. It's for heavy dogs so I got the upgraded version. They also make a lighter version you can find at stores.

I forgot to mention, you can also use a sling under his belly with handles formed from under his armpit and back legs to help him up the stairs. That way you can carry his weight but not pick him up.

I guess if he's small enough you can carry him sling style.

Take care of the dog and do what is in it's best interest. I had to put my Akita down yesterday due to a herniated cervical disk. I couldn't afford the $5k+ for the surgery and it is killing me inside knowing I had to make a poor choice due to financial reasons.

I'm going to have to look at the stairs but I think the distance is fairly long and steep as well, thanks for the offer though on the ramp. I'm thinking something with the patio is going to be my best bet but I just need to figure something out, I'm going to a pet store today so I'll look into the pads.

My dog is a Shiba Inu, isn't the Akita related? Maybe it is genetic. I hope I don't have to put mine down, the doc didn't mention anything about him not fully recovering. He just said that if it didn't get better in a month to come back.

Sorry to hear about your buddy.

The patio idea is probably the best - set him up a place where he can go outside.

The crate is the second best idea, but be careful as your friend will still slide around a bit during the carry. A crate is a good thing to have around anyway.

Good luck.

try one of the large dog cages on your porch with the training sheets for dogs for easy clean up. i think i might have a large dog cage hidden in my basement ill have to check

Let him pee on the neighbors door.

Sorry to hear Adam... I think the slings would be a good idea. He wont fight being picked up, and wont be using all his weight while going up the stairs....

Well I got some pads and going to put them on the balcony and see if he goes...I was planning on putting the bottom part of his cage underneath the pad so it doesn't have any chance of going down to the neighbors. The bottom part is just a large metal pan, and on top of that is the pad he sleeps on. Thinking about it now though, do you think we will recognize the metal pan and associate it with his cage, he really never sees the metal part as the soft part is what he sleeps on? I'm going to put a little snow on it as well to try and make it seem more "natural".

And Doug I don't think Brian would want me having my dog pee on his door but I'll tell him you said it was ok LOL.

When a couple of our dogs developed problems, we were told we could use a large beach towel as a sling. It worked.
I hope he's feeling better soon.

I had a 110 LB Dobie that couldn't do stairs toward the end of his life. I did the sling thing, but I just used a plain old ordinary bath towel as a sling. I didn't have to help him up/down 3 flights, but my dog was much heavier, too.

Sorry to hear about your dog. I'm not sure how a herniated disk is going to heal without treatment. You may want to consider a second opinion if you don't see improvements. I spent thousands on my dog before making the decision to put him down. Hopefully you and your dog will have much better luck. How old is the dog?

It was actually my g/f that took the dog to the vet...she just told me it wasn't a herniated disk...it was something similiar but wasn't touching the spine...she forgot so I'll have to call the vet tomorrow for details. He said rest, anti-inflamatories (sp?), and will heal him.

Also pad didn't work, he didn't even sniff around. I don't think he thinks the balcony is "outside" so he wasn't showing any signs of going to the bathroom. He had to go so we went slowly down the stairs because he won't let me pick him up GRRRRRRRRR. How does the towel sling work? Do I just put the towel under him and pick up? I'm thinking the whole towel supports him, is that correct?
