I'm on my wife's laptop now because I can't get my desktop to connect. Here is the situation

I was browsing the internet today and the power went out for a second. When I restarted the computer, I could not connect. I reset the modem and router and the other computers are working.

My desktop runs Windows XP Home Edition.

In network connections, it shows the adapter card connected but no IP address is shown. When I click "repair connection" I get this error

failed to query TCP/IP settings

Anyone know how to fix this?

open up a command prompt and type "ipconfig" without "" and hit enter.

What do you see?

All Programs > Accessories > Command Prompt

looks like your computer does not recognize your Ethernet or WiFi adapter. Might have gotten fried. Is it on the mother board or a card adapter? Have you tried powering everything off and unplugging the PC before booting? You might need a new card they go easy. Don't know. Need more info. Does it show up in Device manager?

Markk96 is good at these, he might have something helpful to say. Where you at Mark?

right click My Computer > Manage, click on Device Manager. Any ? marks?

I've had to re-install my card once before. You might try to run the software that came from your ISP ( if that is where your card came from ).

Make sure to remove the previous installation before trying to re-install.

Card came installed in the computer. It does show in device manager (1394 Net Adapter) and a check says device is working properly

I'm not an XP user but try looking for the adapter in your control panel and right click on it and select properties. Check to see if IP is even configured for the card.

I would imagine that you would be using DHCP which assigns the address for you. See if it's configured to use DHCP.

Something is wrong if it doesn't show up in IPCONFIG. Even if it isn't currently being used. Sounds like the Ethernet card isn't loading properly. But no conflicts. Are you setup for Auto IP Config no static IP address?

Had the same thing happen awhile ago.

Restart the comp and press delete to enter system setup.
use arrow key down to integrated peripherals, hit enter.
then arrow keys to VIA onchip pci device, enter.
Then look at where it says onchip LAN make sure it is set at enabled.

For some reason when it happened on my system it got switched off.

Tried this but can't get into system setup. Can you elaborate on step 1?

can you ping your router? The IP address you connect to configure.

sorry but I don't know what you are talking about

marino - different brands have different commands to enter BIOS setup

you need to hit the button before it begins to load windows

you can also try F10 or Esc or Delete

what brand is the machine?

when you first start your comp you get a black screen that has your comp info on it, it goes by pretty quick before windows starts up. you have to press delete on this screen to get to system setup.

once again this is BEFORE windows starts up.

You can actually see at the bottom of the black screen it should say press DEL to enter system setup.

A blue screen should open with several options. pressing enter goes further into these options, esc goes back.
to get to your LAN it should be just like I said before.

you will be asked if you want to save any changes when you exit setup.

I would right click on My computer, go to properties, device manager, and make sure that it sees an ethernet card. The IEEE1394 is the firewire adapter and is used for capturing video, etc. The ethernet card is what connects to your router. If there is an ethernet card, make sure that it is not disabled. If it is not there, try rebooting the machine. Watch the screen before it boots into windows. Choose the option to enter into setup (It is usually F2, Delete, F9 or something like that). Make sure that the onboard ethernet card is enabled in CMOS setup. Sometimes you have to tell the CMOS setup to reset config. I can't tell you which screen that would be on, but look through all of the screens offered. If it still doesn't see the ethernet nic, then it probably got fried. You could probably purchase another to be installed into the PCCARD slot on the side of the laptop. Hope this helps.

Whatever happened with the power could have taken out the NIC. Are there any lights flashing on the network card?!?! You should have 1 solid and 1 flashing light (most likely). If you have neither its a problem.

If IPCONFIG is showing nothing and Device Manager is showing nothing the card is probably shot. You can get a PCI card cheap or if you have a wireless router get one of those cheap wireless usb adapters.

I can't imagine it's disabled in BIOS, especially if one minute its working and the next its not. Although I've seen power outages do stranger things.
