OT- need recommendation on fishing!~)

hello fellow reefers,
cathy and i are planning a fishing trip. we want to catch a big halibut. anyone have any suggestions or experiences good or bad. where to go or where not to go and why. any fishing tips would be greatly appreciated too.
of course alaska would be great for the halibut but for now we would prefer something more local.

I don't think you are going to find big halibut of the Cali. shores. I know there are a few places that do charters, because I've heard people talk about them....I would be interesting in the info also..would be a fun trip, even if you aren't catcing the "barn doors".

we would also like to hear about crabbing and clamming in our area.
we were thinking about a day where we set out some crab traps and then did clamming while we wait to check the crab traps. bodega bay comes to mind here.

We make a couple of trips each year up to Newport, Oregon to fish for barn doors (BFB's).
The fishing up there is great! We always come home with enough to fill the freezer and it is somewhat local. Last trip we came home with ~200lbs of halibut for 3 guys. The biggest we saw last time was a 121lb'er. Not too bad for a 10 hour tow up there.
There are also many charter boats that go out of there.

Hey Shawn!
My dad a few years back got a 45 lbs halibut out in SF bay with the New Goldeneye http://www.sfsportfishing.com/NewGoldenEye/index.html
Ive been with the ship twice (once we turned back before we got a chance for much fishing cuz of a blown engine) and the one full trip was great. That was for striped bass. They also do crab pots/lincod trips, and several other seasonal variations. It is not the best service, but they know what to catch, where to catch it, and how to catch it!

(By the way, the 45 lbs was the largest the captain had ever had caught on his boat, so i wouldnt go out expecting one.)

Howz about after I get this WMC thing past me. I don't even have an '06 fishin' licence yet, and a new one is usually my X-Mas present to myself every year. So sad.....

They were nice, i caught my limit and a few of my dads limit. They were huge, but i got a nice 20 lb or so. Im hoping to go out sometime soon on the boat, so ill keep you informed on when.
By the way, doing great, heading down tomorrow to San Diego to try my luck at SCUBA.
