OT: Paludarium?

Does anyone have or have made a paludarium? I was researching building a dart Frog vivarium and stumbled across a few of these. They are quite beautiful, and I was just curious of how difficult they are to construct and maintain. Any info would be great!! Thanks... JD

Tagging along to see what you discover. A salt water paludarium would be very cool, mangroves and eel grass or something for backdrop and filtration. What about an algae turf scrubber as part of the display?
Guess I'm not being helpful if your goal is to keep species that would require FW.. just playing with ideas, thought about building a paludarium before I got rid of the Betta and pleco in favor of More Salt! Haha
Maybe Kraze will jump in with some more productive ideas, think he built a tank that's right up this alley

Tagging along with interest. In the past 2 weeks both my box turtles and water turtles have laid eggs and since I don't let them hibernate outside during their first year of life, I'm going to be raising them indoors this winter. I was trying to figure out a way to keep them all in the same set up (obviously water turtles need mostly water and the box turtles need mostly dry land) so this could very well be a perfect (and attractive) solution!

I'm hoping somebody has one set up locally that I can go check out before I start mine. Its basically a drilled aquarium filled halfway or so with a couple islands built on stilts, obviously a little more complicated because everything is live, but thats the idea. I like the idea of having a miniature rainforest setting in my house. :-)

I went snorkeling in a mangrove forest in a lagoon when I was a kid, it was awesome! I've always thought it would make a great looking aquascape.

I used to have one in a 55 with some small geckos frogs fish and a turtle. It wasn't all grown out like some online but I used some plexiglas and sectioned off an area for water and had wood chips on the other side. I don't know how much help this is but I just had a small water area made in the same way you would put a devider in a sump.

Here is a pic of what was a paludarium, after i turned it back into tank.
You can see silicone marks where the vertical glass walls used to go. Top right was a waterfall from which water dropped to the highest pool, than it dropped the the middle pool, and finally dropped to the main pool which was 50% full/empty. You can see rock shelf on the left side which was the water line in the lowest pool. Top right where u can see ends of bio wheels output, I had a pvc pipe cut in half lenghtwhise, acting as a sort of "gutter" to drop water onto the waterfall. I'll dig out a picture when it was actually a proper faludarium leter on when i get home.
That was some years back before the time of the web boards, the ideas was from Fish magazine which was done as a river paludarium :)
That was my first "mod" before i knew what "mod" was :)

Wow, JarekS...... outstanding! I am definitely getting excited about building one of these in the next couple of months! What is the rockwork on the back..... real rocks stuck into Great Stuff? I'm going to need a lot more "land" are for the baby boxies but your photo has given me some great ideas. More pix if you can, please.

If you haven't seen many paludariums, I'd suggest going to youtube and doing a search, I really like the stingray river one...

I'm in the process of making a paludarium. I'm going to do African Mbuna in the water, a river, and probably some form of gecko/reptile. Not big on frogs, personally. My question would be what you plan on using for misting / humidity. Maybe a slow going spray bar attached to a powerhead? There isn't a good forum for freshwater tanks and vivariums/paludariums like RC, so it's pretty up to me to get creative.

Maybe a filter that takes water and puts it down a waterfall? Also don't they make foggers?

I'll probably just rout a powerhead with piping to flow upwards to the top of a rock structure. And as for foggers, I see a few on amazon. I'm not quite sure how much fog I need and how much to spend. I think I want to do this in at least a 30 gallon tank so that my water portion can have some decent amount of fish. I'd like to do this in a larger tank like a 90. But my empty 90 is acrylic and I don't want to silicon things to the inside of the tank (i'd rather do that with glass).

I'm putting my painted turtle into a 55 with 1' of land and 3' of water. Not really the same as what you're going for, but its a good size I think.

And if you get serious, run a canister filter from the bottom to the top haha

I plan on using a canister filter to run my waterfall. I've also just decided to not go with the palu on my first try, going to do a vivarium with a very small pond and a waterfall. The best source I've found is here... http://www.vivariumforum.com/community/index.php

I've read that forum over a few times and registered there myself. If you lived closer JD I'd say we could work a project together and see how it comes out, this is a very interesting aspect of the tank/aquarium hobby and I'm excited to attempt one myself. I will be posting in this thread and making a build thread regarding it when I do jump the gun. My problem is that I have a spare 90g acrylic tank I can use, but I'd rather do it on glass (I feel safer siliconing the background to glass rather than acrylic). I've done DIY rock walls for reef tanks before so I'm pretty comfortable with that aspect.

Picking up a nice 48 gallon tall 'cube' (well, kind of) tank tomorrow. Going to make a nice paludarium/vivarium out of this. Thank you Craigslist for this dirt cheap nab.

Awesome!! I've been slowly progressing with my 55. I have the false bottom done, working on the waterfall is taking more time than I thought, I'm not a very artsy/creative person. LOL

That 48 tall looks like a perfect tank to do this!!
