So I am planning on building a turtle tank. I am planning on building a tank that is 48"x20"x20". I am thinking of using 1x1s to build a frame for it and staining the wood so it will not swell. Then I was going to use acrylic inside the frame and black gasket maker to secure the acrylic together and within the wood frame. After all this I will build a stand for it. I am also think about on one end below a basking platform I am going to build a filter box. Will this tank work the way I want to build it?

Have you ever thought about just buying a shallow frag tank? It may be cheaper then buying the acrylic.IMO...

I have also thought about building a look down plywood tank. I was going to use the pond liner but I don't know if I want it all black. Plus I worry that as they grow their nails might rip it. If I had one I could get away with a 40 Breeder but there are three of them and they will all get to about 10 inches. With i the next year or so I will be moving to a house so I can put a pond in but until then they will probably grow another 2 or 3 inches making them each about 5-6 inches big.

i have had them about 8 months now. i got them when they where the size of quarter (even though it is against the law to buy a "pet" turtle under 4 inches, they are for educational purposes). i am aware they are dirty. their tank is cleanes twice a week and i always wash my hands after touching them or anything in their tank. the water change bucket is just for them and it sits on the back pourch in the sun to kill anything in it.

I have kept turtles for over 20yrs...You will be fine...Don't scare people with that...Just wash your hands...

You know you can get "pinkeye" from not washing your hands after you wipe too ;)...

There is always something out there, that isn't healthy...just use good hygene...lol
