OT: Please vote for my student

man a popularity contest to decide who gets a scholarship? I'm sorry if I'm alone in this, but I feel disgusted by this.

And I'm not ripping on the OP for posting this, it's the people giving the scholarship in the first place.

No Issue here Mike. You can listen to all of the submission and vote for any one of them. You can actually vote for more than one submission. I probably vote for more than 1 submission. Facebook is blocked at work :) I received an email from the scholarship org that put this together to go and vote almost 2 weeks ago. They blast it out to everyone on their list serve and less than 100 people voted!

Also, I have no issue if the Mod delete and close this thread!

You misunderstand where my issue lies. It has nothing to do with you posting this. It's the way the scholarship is given. Yeah sure you can listen/read the submissions by various students, but at the end of the day it's American Idol in that "the public" decides who gets it, and "the public" very often is just whomever gets enough friends/family to vote for their kid. So at the end of the day it really is less about who has the best project, but who's becomes the most popular due to pimping of parents, teachers, friends.

But again, have no problem with you doing this, you're just following the rules and I would do the same if it were my student. But this seems like something that's fairly important for someone due to how many find serious financial hardships getting into college, and to boil it down to a popularity contest, right now I see two submissions with about 50 votes each, and the others have a couple only, which to me doesn't seem fair for those with a couple, it's not like their projects are that inferior to the other two.

Now if they sent it to 100 people who would be judges and those were the only people who vote I would really have no problems with this type of voting format for a scholarship

Voted, any student that has a teacher that backs them this way I'm comfortable putting in a good word. I realize the vote process is controversial, but to see this kind of support speaks wonders. Good on you, and good luck to your pupil.
