OT - Pond Fish

Well, I just got stuck with 2 shubunkins, 2 koi and 2 comets and know nothing about freshwater ponds. Does anyone know about these fish and or what I need to do. I picked up a long flower pot and put gravel in the bottom along with some plant bulbs. Will that work?

Dude, they are just colorful carp. Give 'em some moving water and they should be fine.

How big is the pond, and how big are the fish? My only concern would be establishing biological filtration. Do some big water changes once a week for the first month, and you should be alright.

DJ might be able to help you out too. He's got a pond... with a surge.

Skimmer boy - can I keep the water stag since they are carp? I have some mosquito fish in their too just in case. The pot is probably like 10 gallons.

Dirty's surge would probably blast the scales off my little peeps.

I just reread your first post. I didn't realize you are keeping them in a flower pot for a pond. I thought you put a flower pot in a pond for them to use as shelter.

I can set you up with a few 10 gallon tanks or a 20H with a filter until you can get a pond set up for them, but i wouldn't house them in a flower pot, and I defitely wouldn't keep them outside in it.

You know those fish grow to 36" right? I have 7 in a pond and they have grown 12" since last season.

Jeff

I knew they got big, but like I said...I got stuck with them. They are 3" right now. I can't build a pond so I guess I am screwed.

I have a friend and a neighbor that both have ponds in Naperville. If you would like I can check with them to see if they are interested in adopting the fish for you.

If you need to get rid of the 2 Shubunkins let me know I have a small pond and I live in Aurora.

If you want to keep them you can get a small plastic pond kit at Menards for $35, my inlaws have one sitting on there deck, in the winter they just move it into the basement.
