Looks like there is a swap meet in Murfreesboro next week held by the Middle Point RC flyers. I think I'll at least stop by to see if there's any good deals. Anyone else interested in going? It's on 3/19.
It was a waste of time going to the swap meet last weekend by the time I went. I paid $5 to get in but didn't buy anything.
I stopped on the way to a convention in Pigeon Forge yesterday at Cookeville Raceway and Hobbies (www.rcheliworkz.com) and my wife talked me into a new Vision 90 Competition helicopter. Now I have to get an engine, muffler, servos, flybarless controller, etc. Ugh!
I have almost got my new heli done. Have it pretty much built, just need to set up the linkages and radio and such. I also have a new profile plane I got on ebay real cheap and maybe if I get off early tomorrow I can get it ready to fly too. Hopefully the weather will be good this weekend and I can do some flying.
I have been having horrible luck with the new heli I got a couple of weeks ago. It was a pain to put together for various reasons and when I finally got it ready to fly it tipped over before it got off the ground and self destructed. It was last Saturday and I wanted to have it flying by Sunday so I went and bought parts at Cookeville for it. I went through the flybarless setup for it and assumed it was something I missed and tried it again. The same thing happened and it tipped over again. While I had it plugged into the computer I noticed the gyro sense which tells you how many degrees per second the heli is rotating went from zero to several degrees per second on aileron and elevator and 900 degrees per second on rudder while it was sitting still! I contacted the guy who makes the flybarless unit and it turns out the flybarless unit is bad. I finally got a replacement and the parts to fix it the second time. If it doesn't work this time I am going to sell it I think, or shoot it.:uzi: Maybe I will get one of these instead. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XaxcFP36ahk&feature=player_embedded#at=76
Yeah, I usually won't go so far as to drive 2 hours for parts but I really wanted to get it going. What a waste of time and gas.
To add to it, a while ago I was trying out the new firmware on my flybarless thing that has a throttle governor function on my 700E. In the beginning it was working great. Towards the end of the flight the RPM started to drop off. I thought it was a firmware problem at first but when I landed I noticed the smell of lithium. One of the batteries was puffed so much it was sticking out the side of the frames. I was barely able to slide it out it was so big. It was so hot I couldn't touch it when I got it out. I left it outside for now. It was dented slightly in a crash several months ago and has done well until now. At least it didn't catch fire.
Well I did get the Vision to fly yesterday! I was about as nervous as the first time I tried to fly a helicopter. After a cautious liftoff it flew very well. I have everything packed up and ready to head to Huntsville in the morning for the big fun fly down there. Many of the pros will be there and it is worth going to see if you have never seen flying like that.
They are having an FPV funfly in GA this weekend and if I can get up really early I might go. It is about a 4.5 hour drive for me though. Might be worth it to see how other people have their planes setup.
I also got lucky and found a guy selling a Dragon Link TX and 3 RXs on rcgroups. I really didn't need to spend any more money but it was a great deal so I jumped on it. I might have some more fpv planes going in the future. Would really like to do something a little faster and more maneuverable. I also might sell the TX and one RX since I don't need two TXs.
Had a bad experience with my Skywalker yesterday. I was flying it around and it started trying to turn on it's own. I could correct for it at first but before I could get it back it started going crazy on me. It ended up in the top of a tree. Luckily the GPS coordinates from my recording took me right to it. Unfortunately it was in the top of a very tall tree. I finally got it with a fishing pole but I'm still not sure what caused it. Here is the thread on it. http://www.rcgroups.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1435052
Hope to get out and fly some this weekend. I need to find out which planes still run and which ones need tinkered with. I've been busy for the last few weeks :crazy1:
I might go to Columbia on Sunday. I doubt I'll have the skywalker flying by then but I put FPV stuff in my Radian Pro glider so I might have it finished. I am really scared to fly the skywalker right now until I know for sure what happened. I have also ordered a small camera and video transmitter for my mini ultra stick. I liked flying it FPV but it was a little on the heavy side.
Any of you still do any flying? Haven't heard from you guys in a while.
I am about to start building a Tricopter for FPV. I did some trading with a guy on rcgroups who had a Multiwiicopter board which is the brains of the whole thing for some dragon link stuff. I should get it later on next week and hopefully can start working on it. If you want to see what a tricopter is check here. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3CPQgyGI0n4&feature=player_embedded#at=12
I also picked up a Blade MCPX today and it is pretty fun to fly. It is tricky to get inverted though. I tried twice and crashed it. Good thing it doesn't break easily.
I put my RVOSD in my Radian and it would barely climb a few weeks ago. I did some searching and it turns out that the props were molded wrong so they didn't produce much thrust. I ordered a new prop and it works great now. I flew it around the house today and the autopilot is much easier to adjust on this OSD than the Dragon OSD. I think I have a winner with it. Hopefully I can take it out and do some real flying with it tomorrow.
