OT - RC Airplanes

Haha! I'll make sure that dime is ready. :) My TwinStar comes in from Tower and my ESCs/servos/motors come in from HobbyKing tomorrow. :D The TwinStar is 14 amps stock... I'll be pushing a little over 40. :D

Maybe dual rates would help on your quad? Could make it so you could use nice and tame or fun. :)

I never have liked dual rates. Forget to flip the switch and try something and don't have enough throw and you crash. I might put a little expo in it though. It is more in the programming of the flight controller that I am thinking of. It has a leveling mode but I haven't messed with it much yet.

Ahh... gotcha... that makes sense.

I will probably just use it plus expo to tame my Sukhoi for a bit and then put the rates back to 100% later when I get a better feel for it.

Brandon

Nothing wrong with using it, just a personal preference. That is the same reason I pretty much fly my helicopter in idle up. I spool it up and flip into idle up as I take off and don't flip out of it until I am landing. I have seen too many people fly around and forget they are in normal mode and try to do a loop or something and when they move the stick down while inverted the engine goes to idle.

Makes sense. Idle up is such an oxy moron. :)

My Sukhoi came in today... what a plane! This thing is quite awesome for $89. Its got plenty of power, although probably not quite enough to hover, but close. It will loop and roll like crazy and its really nice to be able to just pick it up and throw it back into the air after crashing it... especially for me. :D

I'm going to start putting my TwinStar together tonight. It should also be a fun plane to fly!

About to head out to Smyrna for some flying. Hopefully I can get some FPV flights on my quadcopter. Got it dialed in pretty well.

How did flying go today, Mike?

I was able to get a few flights in on my Sukhoi... I freaking love that little plane. I setup dual rates, but after I got used to it on high rates, I hated low rates... I was able to to go through two batteries with only one crash, too. Which is good for me. :) I'm getting use to it and enjoying it. I did some hammerheads and two semi-accidental knife edges today. Good stuff! I wish it wasn't going to be 110 tomorrow or I'd plan on flying on my lunch break. :(

I didn't fly much, I just sat in the shade with my fan on me most of the time. It was too hot to even get up. After I got home I flew the quadcopter FPV and had a lot of fun with it going around trees and such. I crashed it into a low branch trying to go under it and into the kids swingset trying to go between the swings. :D

On another note, I just saw this. :( http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/art...-air-collision-airshow.html?ito=feeds-newsxml Aren't many mustangs left and this was probably the most recognizable of them all.

Wow - that really sucks. At least everyone is OK, though.

Mustangs are awesome, but my favorite warbird is the Corsair. I'd love to be able to at least ride in one someday.

It was too hot for me to even go. :D Sounds like you had some fun when you got home. When are you going to put night vision on it and fly it at night?

That really sucks on that P-51. There were several WWII planes I used to hear flying over Sevierville out of the Tennessee Aviation Museum just about every Saturday. I want to say they were P-51s, but I'll have to double check. Maybe the one that crashed will be salvageable? I doubt it, but here's hoping.

Brandon

BTW, I like about all of the WWII aircraft but I guess mustangs are my favorite. I love the sound of the big V12 Merlin engine. Corsairs are cool too. Whistling Death is what the Japanese called them because they whistled when they went by. Of course you have to glue a dime under the cowl to get them to fly right. :D

They whistled? I would think they'd be an ultra stick. :D

Speaking of my brother's Corsair, one of the aileron servos messed up, so I think we may try to trade it in. It doesn't fly very well. And so my brother is wanting a Sukhoi now... I think Hobby Lobby will help me out. Worst case scenario they'll exchange it I think.

So i got my champ in yest. Had a major crash 2nd time flight then i decided it was time to read the instructions. Flew it alot and love it, making birds mad by dive bombin them. Woke up this morning and the rudders worked but the motor wouldnt come on. After hot wiring it, i got it to work again. Flew it all day and the wind picked up and it crashed, prob is the red wire at the moter broke and there isnt enough wire therw to solder together. So i order new motor and 5 more batteries. I live 20mins south of columbia, is there a closer hobby store then murfreesboro or nashville?

I don't know of anywhere any closer to you really unfortunately. There used to be a Hobbytown in Cool Springs but he closed it down a few years ago. You need to stop by the field in Columbia sometime and see some of the larger planes and helicopters. :)

BTW, anyone flying this weekend? I haven't decided yet if I am or not.

Sounds like you're having a great time, Greg! It also sounds like you're addiction is fairly set in at this point. :D Its as bad as reefing, if not worse! And you do need to come checkout the big stuff. Its a completely different ballgame, but in a great way.

For what its worth, you could probably call Horizon Hobby's helpline and they will probably send you a motor under warranty. My Night Vapor's motor quit and they sent a replacement under warranty. Good stuff!

When you're ready for your next plane, check out the Parkzone T-28 Trojan and their P-51 Mustang. Both are great first 4 channel planes!

Brandon

Was looking into upgrading the motor of some type of parkzone. I seen a youtube vid and his champ plane was pretty quick. Thats the only thing that guy had done and i was impressed with it. The next one i get will have to be faster.
