OT: Recommendations on RC Car

My son, who is 11, wants an RC car from Santa. He doesn't want a inexpensive Walmart special, as he's had in the past. He would like something that's going to last.

Do you have any recommendations??

Thanks in advance!

Check out Fields Hobby on Union Rd just north of Walden, they have a good selection of quality cars. Stick with something in the 200-300 dollar range probably. Don't go the nitro route yet, hes still probably too yound and you would spend too much time wrenching on them. Something like a Traxxas would be good.

Any of the Traxxas products are good quality and Somewhat affordable. Nitro or Electric? Car or Truck? On or Offroad?

When I was younger, I had an electric RC that I bought from a local hobby shop that cost something around $250. It was a kit that I built myself with my father's help. I don't just mean put on the wheels and body... we built the suspension, steering linkages, installed the servos, etc. It was a cool father/son project for sure.

The thing was faster and WAY more durable than a "toy" RC car... but not as fast as some of the better nitro stuff. Mine was a Tamyia (similar to this one), but LOSI and Traxxas stuff is good too.

Sounds like a sweet gift. I can imagine them trying to run this thing in a snowy driveway, I couldn't ever wait for spring to try out my outdoor stuff.

Go with electric to start with. Nitro and Gasoline RC's can be a lot of work & money. Also, with the ongoing improvements of battery's Nitro vehicles have faded out quit a bit over the years. They even replaced a lot the nitro racing classes with electric vehicles since they're so much faster and dependable. Which means less aftermarket parts for some nitros.

I would get either of the following in order for my son if he was 11

http://traxxas.com/products/models/electric/7107_7105erevo116
http://traxxas.com/products/models/electric/7008_7005slash1164wd

They're 1/16 scale which are smaller and better to start out with for youger kids. Those are both waterproof so you can drive in your snowy driveway or even bathtub. Oh yeah, get 4x4 so much easier to drive.

Either of those will last a long time and be the best out there.
Find good deal at this time on ebay. Go to Fields Hobby to see in person and watch youtube videos to see examples.

I used to have the traxxas tmaxx and the stampede both were a blast to play with and if you go brushless very fast. I am actually selling a losi super truck right now but its a nitro and probably a bit more of a truck than your looking for although its huge so it doesnt roll much. On a side note has anyone noticed that pep boys is selling parts for traxxas now?

This is awesome! I used to have a blackfoot and hornet (nitro kits) when I was a kid and loved them. My boys 9 and I've been looking to get him something for his next b-day... He's definately going to need someone to race with... If I have to, I have to... Thx for the post and feedback!

Rc is a blast I have a issue that I should seek professional help with I get bored and need to trade stuff all the time.

Mrs Clause and I had to maintain the budget. With the other "must have" items on the list corners had to be cuts. We ended up with a pair of "off brand" RC trucks, one for him and the other for his brother. So far so good. We bought the protection plan expecting some type of issue to occur more sooner than later. We, er.. I mean Mr and Mrs Clause, decided that if the boys did well with these, we could pickup something nicer in the spring.

That's really the difficult part with my kids. They are "summer" people and have all of their christmas outside toys still in the house. One does laps on the powerwing (cool toy) while the other chases them with an RC truck. Both are crashing into walls. Other times they are in the garage on their new pogo sticks.

Not a lot of winter love in our house.
