my mother was comming back from dropping my sister off at school and there was a large red ear slider crossing the road!
she did not see a pond or creek nearby so she brought him home. it may be a lost pet but we'll keep an eye out for "lost turtle" signs rather than post "found" signs as anyone who is interested in a turtle can try to claim it as their own (plus i like him!!!)
this turtle is as big a football and in great health. i have had a red ear slider in the past who lived off of hotdogs (not the best diet....) and hybernated in my garden with my box turle but that was before i dug my pond....(i gave this turtle away)
any way i am not sure i want to risk putting it in my koipond and i wanted to see what you guys thought of the idea.
most of my koi are well over 5 inches and way longer and wider than this turtles mouth, but would he still try to hurt them? i know the smaller fish, which are fancy gold fish, would be at risk and my tadpoles would likely be eaten (which is fine, i have too many bullfrogs already)
if he lived in my koi pond it would be easier to care for him as he would be able to roam freely in the fenced garden and forage for slugs and bugs alongside my box turtle (who has been in there for 5 years now and i don't have to take care of him at all!)
currently he has a kiddie pool and is in with our big green iguana outside but if he stays there it means i will have to clean his pool all the time and make sure the iguanna does not eat his food.
SO
what do you think?
should i put him in the pond
or will i be condemming my koi to death?
