OT: Smartphone

I've got the droid x...it works great and allows me to do what I want to do. I'm not very tech savvy, so I'm sure I'm wasting a ton of its potential, but the phone is fast, reliable, and with a case on it, pretty indestructible :)

Thank you all for your comments. I really never expected this to generate that much traffic. It is obvious that most of those with Android fully support their decision just as those with the iPhone do. I don't know why but I am just drawn to the iPhone, maybe because of it's 'perceived' COOL factor or more likely because of it's reported reliability. I really dislike Apple's arrogance to tell people that they know what you want better than you do. I definitely prefer an open source environment where I'm able to express myself in my own individual way.

I guess I'm now deciding which flavor of Android I'll be happiest with. I'm too old to worry about being cool anymore. I'll have to research more about 'rooting' an Android. The fact that there are FREE apps is always plus too. I guess now I need to decide why the Droid X and Droid 2 cost so much more that the Droid Incredible.

I still think you should go check out the demo phones at the stores. Apple people will like apple, the same goes with Android. It's all personal preference and both have pros and cons. You can read the "phone a" vs "phone b" reviews all day and you will still be undecided.

Edit: there is buzz of an iPhone5 release this summer some time.

Droid X baby! My Droid X with new Froyo 2.2 OS obliterates all of the iPhone 4 OS that the rest of my family has. They are all thinking of converting over. The iPhone 4 is not a bad phone at all. Just not something you could mess with, it's pretty much as is as you get it. That's how Apple runs(I love my iTouch and am planning to get my fiance a Macbook Pro, so no bias here). But if you want to play with a phone and have options I'd go with a Droid.

I don't think it is that cut and dry really. Motorola is just as interested in securing their firmware as apple is (jailbreaking arms race). On the other hand apple restricts what can go on the apple store. To date the only time I have ever felt the urge to jailbreak was for tethering on the iPhone 3G. Since getting the iPhone 4 I really don't care about tethering. The device itself is good enough.

As far as flash goes good!! I wish more platforms stopped supporting it so it would go away!! I do agree though that is should at least be an option for those that want it.

I have played with my friend's android phones before and they are nice enough I guess but they definitely lack the polish of the iPhones both in product design and OS.

The beauty of android os is that you don't have to buy Motorola if they're doing something you don't like.

I guess its all about freedom to me, and in my opinion apple has become quite anti freedom. Shouldn't I be the one to choose if I want to use flash or run down my battery by using more than one app at a time?

I have to chime in here in regards to the iPhone flash argument, because it's always the first poke at the iOS.

I browse the web on my phone, for hours, on a daily basis and I cannot think of 1 example of when I wish I had flash capability. If a site requires flash, there will more than likely be an optimized app available (for example - HBO.com). The apps are usually dumbed down versions of the full web site and will generally be easier to nagivate than the site itself. Espesically on a small screen.

Battery life is poor on all smart phones. Unless you plan to not use it, you will need to charge it every night.

Again - Try the phones at the store, play with what you think you will use the most (touch screen sensitivity, scrolling, Browser, texting, keyboard etc...) and base your decision on that.

The flash argument to me is more about freedom to use my phone the way I want and fair business practice. Apple doesn't want flash capability because it competes with QuickTime, but they feed the public some other lame excuse. I'm pretty sure Microsoft got into big trouble for stifling competition on their os; I'm waiting for the same to happen to apple with their mobile os.
