OT - Snow Dogs

Drove about 2 hours to get to some snow to the let the doggies play. Took a couple decent pictures and thought I'd share.

I'm just learning to shoot in RAW & process them.

I'm shooting with a Canon Rebel XS (with the kit lense).

Any suggestions for shooting & post processing to make them better?

Excellent work! Too often when shooting snow the image is underexposed and the ground is more grey than the powder white it really should be. Your snow however is nice and white, accept for the shade where it shouldn't be. Good use of the "rule of thirds" and your images a tack-sharp.

Rule of thirds?

What settings should be used for snow shots? I will be taking pics this weekend when we go snow shoeing in the hills.

The best setting for snow is manual exposure.

Meter on the snow, set the camera to overexpose 1 to 1.5 stops and fire away.

What do you mean by meter on the snow? Do cameras have a built in light meter? If so, where is it, and how to you meter on a subject?

Thanks.

Just like when using your flash, I told you to (as a general rule) meter for ambient light and underexpose two stops. This is the same meter...he just wont be using flash.

The meter looks for a grey object. Everything it sees it interprets as 18% grey. Snow is white...so the light meter will be fooled into underexposing the scene (because it thinks the snow is grey).

Black works just the opposite. The camera will overexpose to make the black grey.

Green trees usually overexpose 2/3 of a stop, so if you back the light meter reading's recommendation -2/3 of a stop you should have a proper exposure.
