OT: Star Wars Episode I 3D

Has anyone seen this on the big screen? Obviously Lucas is looking to use the 3D gimmick to milk some more money from this series but my ten year old is asking me if we can go see it. He and I have enjoyed the series on DVD but even a 65" HDTV doesn't compare to the theaters. I haven't bothered to try 3D in the theaters as I've never been that impressed by it at home and generally find the color shadowing to be distracting. I wondering what others think about 3D in theaters and specifically this Star Wars release.

If it's done right, 3D in theaters is awesome. Only issue I really have with it is the price. I'd say it's well worth it though to get the next generation hooked on SW.

I took daughter to see 'Journey 2' in 3D yesterday. Save your time and money... It sucked big time! Lame plot, cheap special effects and boring!
There was a Daffy Duck preview they played before the feature film. The 3D effect in THAT was really good. Certain movies are really good in showing the 3D effect (Avatar) and some aren't. I don't know about SW#1.

There was a preview for a new 'Clash of the Titans' and the 3D in THAT looked spectacular. Let's hope the storyline is as good!

Thomas and I went and saw it Friday night. Worth the time and money! Some of the best 3D I've seen at the theater. It wasn't distracting nor did it have "ghosting". They didn't overdo it either. Really it just made everything look more "real".

and 3D glasses question:
there are "active" and "passive" 3D glasses. Is one type "better" than the other? I have both types here but no 3D blu-ray disc yet.

Which one is "better" is an entire debate in and of itself. Easy answer - what type of 3D TV do you have? That will dictate what type of glasses you can use. I assume if you have active 3D glasses you must have an active 3D TV. But then I start to wonder why you also have passive 3D glasses (the type that movie theaters use).

Active glasses have a shutter that opens/closes rapidly (don't remember Hz, it's 12:12am...) - passive use color differences between the lenses to show each eye different pictures. The old style were red/blue. Newer ones are amber and something... once again, it's late, and I don't feel like pressing CTRL-T to open wikipedia.

thanks for the reply, Vince

we brought passive glasses home from the movie theatre. Active pair came with the Samsung Blu-ray player.

Now regarding 3D movie titles for Blu-ray: where do you get 'em? I can't find the movie 'Avatar' in a 3D Bluray. I saw 'Star Wars' in "regular" Blu-ray. Is the 3D offered for sale yet?

I'm not a big fan of purchasing tapes, DVD, or BluRay discs but I'd at least like to have a couple on hand.

Avatar in a 3D Blu-ray would seem like a logical choice. I also want 'Blue Planet' but no local retailers carry it. Best Buy, Target and the likes offer the "normal" stuff you'd expect (Harry Potter, Lion King etc.) in 3D Bluray but I couldn't find any help regarding Avatar 3D or Blue Planet.

The passive glasses you brought home from the movie theater won't work. You need to use the active pair. Some older 3D movies come with 3D glasses but that is the "old" technology where you have a blue/red lense (anaglyphic 3D). You don't need 3D equipment for those movies.

The glasses from the movie theater use Polarization 3D, similar to anaglyphic but different.

Now... do you have a 3D TV (or 3D ready TV)? If you don't, you won't be watching 3D movies with active shutter glasses. You need a 3D TV and a 3D blu-ray player. Unsure? Check here:

Some good reading:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/3D_television

Star Wars just came out in 3D for Episode I. It will be a while before that is offered in 3D Blu-ray.

You can sign up here to be notified when Avatar is available in 3D Blu-ray:
http://www.amazon.com/Avatar-Versio...VXVY/ref=sr_1_8?ie=UTF8&qid=1329671059&sr=8-8

AFAIK, Blue Planet is not available in 3D Blu-ray. Here's a great resource:
http://www.3dmovielist.com/3ddvds.html

That is an up-to-date list of ALL DVDs (anaglyphic) and Blu-rays that are available in 3D, with links to purchase them from Amazon. You don't have to buy there, but at least you can get the ASIN and make sure you are getting the correct product from your preferred retailer (online or brick-and-mortar).

Gary - you've helped me out back when I was in the hobby, so if you have the right TV, PM me and I can let you borrow a couple of 3D Blu-rays to check them out.
