OT: Stop smoking aids and quiting

Everytime you get a craving, donate $10 to a charity. You will quit really fast! haha

Most cigarette stores have these little plastic end filters that I use, they filter out 75% of the nicotine and tar, and you can see it add up. Its really quite gross after 5 cigs or so. I used these for about a month before I went cold turkey, really helped quite a bit.

Best of luck to you Ryan... We quit on January 1st this year with the patch and it was not easy but still to this day neither one of us have taken a drag. We have definatly found other things to put our cigarette savings to also, just look at our tanks! So you really dont "save" money you just find other places to spend it.

I feel for you there!

If your wife isn't quitting too you'll have a tough road. Second hand smoke is very bad for you too! :(

I'm sorry... but hang in there! Your body will love you for quitting!

Go for a jog. :) The weather is nice and you'll see how bad your lungs really are!
true dat!!!:D

If your wife insists on continuing smoking, you should disallow her from smoking in the house, OR in fact anywhere in your presence. She needs to be aware that her choices are her own, but to smoke around you is to sabatoge your efforts--there is no 2 ways around that.

I Have been a reformed smoker for 3 years. I have tried to quit at least 4 or 5 times in the past and have failed. Like you, I finally reached the point where I could be successful.

Quiting smoking can be very very difficult but the rewards are great. I smoked for 18 years and at one time, was up to 2 packs / day.

In the past, I have tried cold turkey, but this time I tried "the patch". I didn't exactly follow the directions, but it helped alot.

The point is, do whatever it takes to be successful!

I may just be strange but, to help myself, I occasionally told myself that I didn't need a smoke because I just had one. I know, that sounds stupid, but it worked for me...along with the nicoderm. I quickly weened myself off that, but dont kid yourself, quiting is a lifelong endevour.

At first, I often had dreams of smoking, and often awoke feeling guilty. I even dreamed that I would smoke and hide it from my family and friends.

Once you cycle through a full year, its all downhill from there. I found that as I did something that I havn't done as an ex-smoker, it would trigger the desire to smoke. Even as the seasons changed, the urge would come back.

Don't ever kid yourself into believing that just one won't hurt.

Don't ever pick up another! Remember how many times it took?

You ARE ready! You CAN do this!

Think of your loved ones but...
Do this for Yourself!

Very Best Of Luck!

Oh yeah...forgot this.

Right before I quit, when I was thinking about it, I decided that I needed to have a complete physical. After all, I wasn't getting any younger, and I too wanted to live to see grandchildren.

So I went to the doctor, got bloodwork and an EKG and expressed my desire to quit. The Doc applauded me and wrote me a prescription. Unfortunately, my plan didn't cover it, but I didn't let it stop me and set the "quit date".

Two weeks later, I went back for my bloodwork results and was shocked to hear the bad news. My cholesterol was out of control! The bad was high and the good was low! He insisted that I follow his strict diet or heart problems were inevitable!

Heart problems?!! My Dad had a series of heart attacks!

I need to quit smoking!

So I quit but couldn't come close to following that diet. As a matter of fact, I ate everything under the sun. I started to gain weight! I kept eating and gained more weight!
I was still smokless!

Anyway, six months later, I went back for a followup visit and was greeted with the "good news - bad news" report. Knowing my eating habits lately, I said "gimme the good news, I already know the bad!" So the Doc said...your cholesterol looks great! Have you been folowing the diet?

LMAO! Diet?! LMAO! Yeah right! Icecream and cake diet!
So what am I doing differently?

NO SMOKES!!

Yes, smoking can even affect your cholesterol levels!

Your health will be so much better in many different ways when you quit.

Don't deprive yourself of these benifits! You will soon feel much better both physically and mentally. As long as you don't gain fifty pounds! LOL

But seriously, a few pounds is normal and far better than smoking!

When you get past two weeks you will start to notice that every day gets a little easier; the thoughts of cigarettes are less frequent and you will notice that you are starting to feel more energetic and that you can breathe easier and deeper. It will become easier to say no to smoking and pretty soon it will start becoming really easy. This can give you the confidence to know that one day the time when you will hardly think about cigarettes at all. Sure, there will be times when you might get stressed or a little sad and you might think about having a cigarette. That is normal. Nothing to worry about. During these times you can just turn your attention to something else, like talking, drinking a glass of water or taking a walk. Or, working on your tank! Each time you think about having a cigarette and you just turn your attention to something else and the desire goes away, your confidence will get stronger and stronger. 95% of all smokers who return to smoking go back because they are afraid of the feeling of wanting cigarettes, but since you know it is normal to want cigarettes from time to time, you don't have to be afraid of anything at all. Congratulations!

Ryan, ditto everything cpagego said. And 2 more thoughts:

First, you may notice an increase in coughing/phlegm production at first. Not to worry--this is your lung finally having the chance to clear out all the crap from the death sticks--it'll pass within a number of days.

And secondly--and many posts have alluded to this--it helps to have a battle plan *set in advance* of how you will combat your urges. Because you will have them. Success is in managing them. Walks, working on tank, a soda, hard candy, cut veggies, whatever--but something to manage through them, because urges are time-limited, so you just have to wait them out.

9 days and my body feels like a frieght train hit it. I am sore as heck, my throught hurts. and I am tired all the time.
