poor coverage area? mobile phones have to meet certain signal levels each direction to actually setup a call or even sustain one to keep from excessive dropping. text messaging doesn't follow the same thresholds. back in the day this was the only way to communicate down at the lake until they started competing down there for best service provider.

was probably on the fringe of coverage from a bigger town or roadway.. who knows
