OT Thread - Happy with Mangini?

Do ya think the Browns got it right?

Can you build on a coach or should you start with the President, GM then coach?

I look at successful teams like the Steelers and they have an excellent ORGANIZATION. I would expect that even a mediocre coach could make there. I don't believe the Browns are a top notch organization from head down.

No I am not happy with it. First of all Mangini has a losing record as head coach. Second of all now they have to hire a GM that is completely in line with Mangini's way of thinking. Otherwise when things start going wrong the GM will blame Mangini and Mangini will blame the GM.

Or, maybe they are hiring someone that they knows sucks, and before the GM so failure is more likely, so they can go after Cowher next year when he says he wants to get back into coaching...... Not that I believe it 100%, but maybe Lerner isn't as dumb as everybody thinks.......

Obviously Lerner learn absolutely nothing from his dad, who started out selling furniture for $75 a week....he never had the learn the hard way, like 95% of us here.....he was handed a few billion upon his father's death. You can learn only so much from textbooks, the reast has to be learned thru hard work. I just hope, by accident, that he hires the right coach one of these days......

I can remember not so many years ago, I would be mad all week if the Browns lost on Sunday....now, I'm getting a who cares attitude with the passing of year after year of bad football....i want the good old days back. My bro in law gave me copies of the red right game and the playoff double overtime game with the Jets at xmas....it was nice to watch good football again.

Nope. In any other profession, getting fired would not qualify as a resume highlight (with the exception of a professionsl transiant CEO). Why should it in sports?

Hiring someone who sucked somewhere else doesn't excite me in the least.

My choice would have been Marty. Say what you will about him never getting to the big game, he always fields competitive teams, wins more than he loses, understands the rivalry with the Steelers, and was the best coach we have had in my lifetime. I can't believe he was not even interviewed.....

I think its a good hire, also Lerner has done well at aston villa, so I dont doubt his ability/potential. I think gini will end up good. We need someone who makes good personnel decisions tho.

I am really surprised that no one seems to like him (mangini) on talk radio, or really anywhere. What isnt to like? he was 10-6 his 2nd year and 8-3 this year, the jets failed bc of brett farve, to put it on anyone else is wrong. Plus there was no one else out there better. Going with an assistant was no longer an option, a college coach wasn't an option... Marty didn't want to coach, shanahan will take a year off most likely, and basically said no anyway, cowher said no, and I dont think he would be any good here, not sure who everyone wants.

i'm in the fence about Mangina at the moment....I'd do like the fact that he is more of a disciplinarian....we have plenty of prima donnas to keep him busy....maybe that's what we need...it helped the Patriots, Giants..etc to get over the hump.

i wont decide if hes good till i see the first half of next season. if he has the balls to bench edwards for dropping passes i will like him though

Personally, I think a GM should have a lot of say as to who is hired as coach. When you hire a coach first then look for a GM, I think it sends a clear signal to perspective candidates that its a puppet position within the org structure and that the owner plans to call the shots. Just look at all the potential GM candidates that bailed upon news of the hire:

Rich McKay
Scott Pioli
Tom Heckert

I expect a few more years of lackluster performance. Whether Mangini is a good pick or not, doesn't matter, the Browns' issues start in the head office. I hope I am wrong or I am going to find another time waste for Sundays in the fall.

If they continue forward as inept as they have been for the last decade, then the Browns are dead - the history, the tradition....

If the owner and the players do not know what it means to be a Brown, then rename the team for the sake of the tradition.

I wanted to hear Mangini make only one statement - " The losing mentality ends now. There are only two games next year and we will beat Pittsburgh both times."

Wow- This is a typical Cleveland half glass empty attitude. I`m not saying Mangenius will be the next Lambardi, but come on. Why do you think Green Bay let Favre go? Because he was at the top of his game? NOOOO, because he`s an over the hill, cry baby interception machine. Did Mangini throw an interception this year? NOOOO. Give him a chance before you guys run him out of town, just like Couch. I bet you guys wouldn`t mind having Belichick back and most Clevelanders thought he sucked when he was fired too. Did Belichick have a winning record when he was fired from here? NOOOO. He was 5-11 his last season. Now he`s one of if not the best coach in the league, correct? All I`m saying is, give the guy a chance.

Dave

Many head coaches were not successful until their second head coaching job in the nfl. Mangini will bring a discipline the browns haven't had since they have been back in the league. I honestly think he has a chance to be a great coach for the browns and got a raw deal in new york. If I'm lerner, I would certainly want to have a guy with a chip on his shoulder instead of a guy who is competely new to head coaching.

I agree 100% there.

My issue isn't necessarily with the Mangini as a pick. However, I just would have thought they would be looking to implement a new GM first. A GM's job is to run a team and make personnel decisions or at least take part in the discussion. If the owner is going to do all that, why hire a GM at all.

Its kinda hard not to have a glass is half empty attitude when our hopes have been smashed on an annual basis. Wasn't this supposed to be the year we were a contender?

as someone who is not a browns fan i've got to say i'm happy with your pick. on the bright side for the browns fans the browns lament of next year wont have to change for a while.
