ot: what camera to get?

i would recommend you spend money on the lens. the body is always upgradable. the lens stay the same for the last 10-15 years.

heheh so what is iso? in search of corals?! lol

makes me want to stick to the point and shoot. lol

ISO is the grain size on film. the larger the specs of silver oxide, the less light is needed, but the grainier the picture. in DSLRs there is the same relationship. ISO is also known as film speed

the next thing to consider is aperture, the wider it is opened, the less light/time you need but the less depth of field

and then there is shutter speed, the shorter the shutter time, the less blurry you will get from motion, but you need more light/aperture and or ISO

once you figure all that all out, all you need to do is focus and click, assuming you have set your white balance or are shooting in RAW

I am poor and do not have $1k for a camera. I bought a wannabe DSLR, canon S5 iS, IIRC the current model is the S6 iS

you can shoot in RAW with a software patch called CHDK

you can get various telephoto and macro lenses with a 52mm adapter

you can manually adjust ISO, shutter, aperture, focus, and white balance

it is not a DSLR, but it can be had for under $400

there is a lot to be said for that.. as PAS cameras have a smaller CCD, they naturally have a greater depth of field

I got the D60 for my first DSLR and both my wife and I like it so far. BestBuy has it for 549. The D40 is the same price with a 55-200mm lens and bag. There were just a few features I liked more on the D60.
I got it to take reef shots, but mainly to get pics of my 1.5yr old (she moves too fast).

To put it in layman's term: most point and shoot suck at low light conditions, ie. can't capture squat. Most dSLRs, due to good ISO performance, can capture very acceptable photos with low light- albeit with some noise..

Technically, "ISO" dictates how sensitive the sensor is to light. Low ISO number means less sensitive (used if there is plenty of light) almost no noise. High ISO means the sensor is more sensitive to light, at the expense of a slower shutter speed and higher noise (the grainy thing you see in most dark photos) When people say "this camera has good performance at higher ISOs" that means that the image taken at low light doesn't have too much noise.

Instead of pondering about Canon, Nikon, Leica, Schmeica, etc. I would borrow a dslr and start shooting until you determine what YOU want.. Buy according to features YOU need and what feels the most comfortable to you. Make a list of features that you have to have in a camera, list your budget, and then start your research.

Remember, if you hate your equipment, then there's a less chance of you taking it to trips and go shooting with it.

costco has the d60 with two lens for $699. I purchased mine when it came out, has to be the best purchase i made for the hobby - i think im gonna get this.

phellox's is the same camera without the extra lens. i might as well get a new one at costco since he's selling his at $650. :-)

i think i'll go tomorrow hehehe

does anyone know what kind of camera Peter lik uses and how he takes those amazing photographs. Also can you blow up a picture to be poster size (24x36 or bigger) using any slr/ dslr without it being grainny.

Looks like he uses Medium format Hasselblad..... which are the price of a brand new car lol

I read he uses Film and digital , The film camera is a linhof technorama 617 siii.

His work is amazing !

He is amazing no doubt about it. You can create similar images using the same technique though. Its called HDR photography, it gets complicated tho and you need some experience with photoshop. HDR can be done with any camera with a raw feature and exposure bracketing. Some examples here: http://www.flickr.com/search/?q=HDR landscape&w=all&s=int

He is very talented and shoots amazing pics, its all about having the oppurtunity to go to amazing places too. Combine that with a good eye and technical know how and you are good to go.

WOW that is really cool I am going to read about this

Bret I have a question for you , which program do you prefer ? aperture or lightroom ? I have a new imac on the way and want to get one of these programs

I use photo mechanic and cs3 but only because it's what I know and trained on. If I where to go back I would use aperture or even better but more $$$ I would use capture one pro. A good friend of mine uses it and swears by it, downside is you need a course in it to fully grasp the software.

I guess I will keep CS and try aperture , I am learning CS so the program your friend recommends I probably wont bother with it since this is a hobby not a profession for me. I might start taking pics at dog shows but that is still a maybe or if project lol

these are nice pictures. but i think with a photoshop master, then can create the same image. hehehe imo
