im thinking of getting a nice camera, what do you guys currently have that takes all those nice pix? i saw a commercial with aston kucher (sp?) he had a digital slr that takes hd videos, is that good enough?

Thats the new Nikon, sells for about $1000 for the body. Great camera for the money. Good pics come down to many things, the camera, lens ( Get a good macro lens from Nikon or Canon, alternatives like sigma are good for someone on a budget but in all honesty, the extra $100 is between a dodge neon and a Bentley, Canon have rebates right now!) I am Canon Bias so would look into Canon. The HD video feature is the future, I would use it but if you dont need it then dont bother.

Camera's to look into:

Canon 50D, amazing consumer camera (Canon's latest)
Canon 40D, previous model, very good and can be got at a good price. You dont need crazy megapixels, 8 and up is fine for what you want.

Lens is the most important item on your list!!!!! Just like certain things in our hobby, skimmers, pumps etc, spend the money on a good lens.

Practice, Practice and Practice a bit more!

That camera is the new D90. I just bought the D300 and (I think I'm gonna get flamed for this) because now I wish I should have bought the D90 instead and used the extra cash for a prime lens. However, I need the intervalometer on the D300 because I shoot a lot of time lapse so that kinda made the decision for me.

It should also be noted that the D90 has a limit of 5 minutes of video. Also, due to the sensor being CMOS, you get the jello effect if you pan too quickly while shooting vid. Other than that, this beast takes awesome photos!

Since I'm a Nikonian, I'm biased on Nikons so my suggestion would be the D90 (if your budget allows). If you're really on a tight budget, the D40 is a nice entry level dSLR. The D300 has a steep learning curve if you're coming from point & shoot and you might not need all its features (exposure bracketing, ability to meter with AIS lenses, 51-pt focus points, intervalometer..etc) You can get some pretty nice deals on used stuff from B&H if you look around.

Here's a good read from the Photography forum:
Which DSLR?

hope that helps

I would go to a camera place and decide on how comfortable the camera feels in your hand. Thats why i went the nikon route. To me live view and video isnt a factor and arent a need. Focus on the lens and practice practice. Those two are more important than the body itself

i like the D5 Mark II canon. i have D5 older version. if you want, you can take the D5 older version i have. it is used for like 6 months. i can then upgrade to D5 mark II. it is a great camera.
go with canon, cheaper lens. nikon, expensive lens.

i like the 5D Mark II canon.
Now that is a sick camera! I would love to upgrade to that.

I got a canon 20D ( used $400 with standard lens ( 28-80mm), battery, charger and cf disk) if you want to go cheap I suggest getting an older model and just get a good lens. xsi, or xti should be a good camera for you. I want to get a 40D next or the new upgraded 5D.

I own canon and have for years ;)

When you decide on the body (Canon or Nikon) you will probably stick with that brand since lenses aren't interchangeable between the two.

You'll want to get a nice lens and maybe a macro one also... so figure that into your budget.

Not sure what budget you have for this but the Canon XSi is a nice camera if it fits in your hand ok. I believe the XS is the same however with a smaller LCD viewer. Check out Costco.com also for their great return policy.

How do you like the 20D. I'm getting one this week and plan to sell-off my XTi.

I like it , its heavier than the xti and xsi because it does not have a plastic body.

I also like the higher ISO setting it goes to 1600. I think its great , I have had no problems with it so far, I am glad I went with the 20D to start me off with DSLR.

The only con is that the LCD screen is small which is really not that bad of a con for me because I use it enough that I can tell if a pic is blurry or tack sharp.

Yeah, I'm getting it to see if I don't mind the extra weight. I figure If I do get the 5D, I don't want to be shocked at the extra weight. I am worried about the smaller lcd but oh well!

BTW, My XTi goes up to 1600 ISO.

I meant to say 3200 lol The 20D can go up to 3200 sorry

Yeah the weight will be similar , you will get use to the screen , but you where spoiled from the xti so it might be harder lol

I didn't have a dslr so its not that big of a deal for me.

costco has the d60 with two lens for $699. I purchased mine when it came out, has to be the best purchase i made for the hobby.

I can help you out if you want, I personally don't believe in books but if someone is willing to lend you some then go with it. I would not go out and buy a book though. Digital has made the learning curve very quick but like I said I am more than willing to help out if you have nay questions or want some tech knowledge. I taught photography to several people back home before I came to the US.

The 20D route is a good one to take, its all about the lens!
