ot: what camera to get?

Instead of pondering about Canon, Nikon, Leica, Schmeica, etc. I would borrow a dslr and start shooting until you determine what YOU want.. Buy according to features YOU need and what feels the most comfortable to you. Make a list of features that you have to have in a camera, list your budget, and then start your research.

Remember, if you hate your equipment, then there's a less chance of you taking it to trips and go shooting with it.
That's the best advise given so far. Don't get hung up on the model number or fancy features when your barely learning to crawl. You may even find out that a dslr isn't for you and better to find that out now then after you've blown $1k!
