OT- What do you do for FUN in Socal?

Kayaking is fun, if you want local.. Newport backbay is a nice ride. If you want to fish in a Kayak, La Jolla in San Diego is great. There are seals right next to you and caves you can kayak through.

You can go to the tidepools there is a nice small on in Corona Del Mar, tons of starfish, sea urchins, anemones etc. There is also a tidepool in Dana Point but its further. BTW, the tidepools are right next to the place in Corona Del Mar that gives away free salt water.

Go hiking in the San Gabriel mnts...tons of nice trails for many levels.

Go to the beach and cruise around the nice little shops.

See a show....Wicked is going to play in OC soon but it is all sold out :(

I like cruising the isles of Ikea. Costco is nice too...but thats already been mentioned.

Go to conventions....I think there was just an Anime convention or its going on right now.

Go to the OC Swap Meet in Costa Mesa, that would take up at least half of a day.

I can go on and on but I think I'll stop now. Have fun!!

I think it's saying that the BBQ on the front lawn is free to guests who paid an aquarium admission that day, and it gives the admission prices, then members have pricing just for the BBQ, since they normally get in free anyway.

Then the one on the Terrace is the extra $13 for members or non-members?

It's not very clear, is it!

So does the length of the kayak determine its purpose? Its around 14-16 feet.

The length of the kayak doesnt determine the purpose. The way they are made does. River kayaks, you sit in the kayaks and ocean kayaks, you sit on top.

Thats why SoCal beats the rest of the states, we can do anything anytime, just way to much to chose from.

Spend all day on RC, now that's fun.LOL. I do like the Costco activity especially when they're are a lot of samples to be tried.

Go visit a local animal shelter and volunteer to help with the lttle peros(dogs) and the little gatos(cats). Go picket at the zoo insisting that they send the elephants to a sanctuary, volunteer at a local marine rescue feeding sick sea lions back to health.

Perro=**Dog**

Pero=(**But**)I thought you said....

noschmo where is it possible to volunteer? Long Beach, or do I need to go all the way to sea world?

So Cal activities

So Cal activities

I am a water lover and also enjoy alternative sports scuba, kayak fishing, surfing, mountain biking, fishing, hiking and snowboarding. It all depends on what type of activity you are looking to do something that is just a relaxing day or maybe you want some excercise in there as well and weather determines what type of activity as well recently I have not even given any thought to hiking or mountain biking because it is just too hot so I have been spending more time at the beach in the water I also just started kite flying I got a stunt kite as a gift and I can spend hours just relaxing at the beach flying my kite or you can go down to the tidepools and spend a few hours strolling around looking at the local ocean creatures. There are endless activities in So Cal especially with the weather being what it has been the past couple of weeks just remember to wear plenty of sunscreen :D if you are outdoors Here are a couple of phone numbers for beach conditions HB surf/tide report (714) 336-9303 or Laguna dive/surf report (949) 494-6573

You got this wrong....Maybe I want to build an AR-15 cant do that, If I want to ride my quad I have at least 100 mile drive just to do that....

I went Black Smithing with my brother and a friend yesterday in Vista. It was a true learning experience. Now I know how to build a coal fire, keep it banked, make coke (not the drug!) and made two useful things. I already new how to do a far bit of metal working but learned more. All that and it was only $5.00! Oh and a little sweat. It was actually cooler there then in Irvine.

So does the length of the kayak determine its purpose? Its around 14-16 feet.

It's not that simple. Length is a key issue, but it also matters how they are made.

Ocean kayaks for touring or cold water are sit-in kayaks and tend to be quite long, so you have room for all your gear. Longer kayaks track better and handle waves better. There are sit-on-top ocean kayaks for playing in the surf and calm bay areas. More nimble, but no place for gear and no protection from the elements.

River kayaks are usually shorter, getting progressively shorter the more they are made for whitewater kayaking. But you can take an ocaan kayak on a big lake or a lazy river and a river kayak on calm ocean water.

A 14-16' kayak could be anything except a hard core touring kayak or a whitewater kayak. Its probably a recreational kayak -- i.e. does lots of stuff but none of it very well. If it's the kind where you sit on top, its definately recreational.

Sam, you could always go hard core, get a little 8' kayak, and take up kayak polo. Don't forget the helmet!

Wow! Good stuff guys!

It's easy to be jaded and forget all of the fun we can have right here. The traffic & heat are just soooooo bad but that's the trade-off for the beach etc.

Thanks to all who have posted & keep it coming! :D

Nicole, its the type where you sit in and it has room for my legs inside.

I was working my 4ss off and they gave it to me :)

I think Im going to take it to long beach on 4th of July and hit the waves.I wonder If I can just take it in there?

Nice bonus! A 14' sit-in will probably be fine in the surf, as long as the surf isn't too wild that day. I think most people paddle around the harbor in LB. Find a spot where other kayakers are putting in on the surf side, maybe.

Important tip: when a wave is coming, you must be perpendicular to the wave. Otherwise, you are going for a swim.

It is hard when you have access to excess. :D

Actually SOT (sit on top) kayaks are what you should be used in the surf sit in yaks are dangerous in the surf since you are sitting inside the yak and if necessary you cannot get out quickly if caught in the turbulence of a wave or if you get caught by a wave and you are in shallow water and get rolled you can hit the bottom before being able to get out. Sit on top kayaks are much better suited for entering and exiting through the surf and they are made with storage hatches to gain access to the inside of the kayak while on the water so that items can be safely stored for a surf launch or landing. Sit on top kayaks are also far more stable than sit in kayaks that is why most sit on tops are used for activities like fishing and scuba diving sit in touring kayaks are made for long paddles and going fast while sit on tops are made to give you a stable platform for activities other than going long distances and going fast.
