OT: Why are so many of us in IT? Coincidence? I think not!

There are a ton of reefers that are in the IT field... network engineers and admins, dbas, web masters... the list goes on. Why are so many reefers in IT? OR, is the question more like "Why are so many IT guys reefers"?

I am a .Net Programmer and my company's web master. If your in IT, what do you do? Why do you think reef-keeping and IT seem to be so well matched?

I've been in the IT field since I was 16 (32 now). I'm a Sys Admin/Senior Project Manager.
I'm guessing that a lot of IT folks are very detailed oriented due to the nature of the field and are always up for on going technical challenges similar to reefing. It keeps our minds at work. This is how I am at least.

Yup - has nothing to do with the number of IT folks in the hobby. It has to do with the fact that, regardless of the hobby, IT folks are more likely to go online with it. (and can generally get away with it during work hours)

ummm.... geeks and nerds know how to find and use forums ??

Heh, I prefer to call myself a "geek".
The difference between a geek and a nerd is, a nerd doesn't know he/she is a nerd. ;)

I think it is also becuase we are used to finding and solving problems... getting to the root (pun intended) of things.

Agreed. Now, a good poll would be, are you in IT AND have a tank at work?? :D

Software designer.

I got my love of fish and their environments from my father. As a child we vacationed in Hawaii every year and as soon as I was old enough he took me scuba diving. As I got older the dive trips got more and more exotic. I grew up with fish dinner ware, fish paintings on all the walls, fish linens. Everything was fish and/or marine related.

He also got me into my other hobby, photography.

I think there is no strong correlation between our IT careers and this hobby.

What you may be observing is the fact that of reefkeepers, the X percent that are in IT, are more likely to frequent an Internet web site than the Y percent who are not technical people.

Also bear in mind, you are posting this question to the Southern California members of this website. So Cal has one of the highest densities of IT people in the nation.

I think the So cal forum of a Web site will most likely represent a portion of the population that 1) Live in so CA, and 2) are highly technical.

Cheers
Josh

I'm a software analyst. Funny thing is the person who got me into this hobby(my cousin) 6 years ago has a phd in eecs from cal. From one super nerd to an average nerd...=)

Sys Admin here...

I am A geek. The differance between a Geek and a Nerd is that Geeks get the chicks!
Reminded me of this joke
:
Michael Jordan will make over $300,000/game: $10,000 a minute, assuming he averages about 30 minutes per game.
Assuming $40 million in endorsements next year,he'll be making $178,100 a day (working or not)!

Assuming he sleeps 7 hrs a night, he makes $52,000 every night.

If he goes to a movie, he'll pay $7.00, but he'll make $18,550.

He'll make $3,710 while watching each episode of Friends.

If he wanted to save up for a new Acura NSX ($90,000), it would take him a whole 12 hours.

If you were given a tenth of a penny for every dollar he made, you'd be living comfortably at $65,000 a year.

Next year, he'll make more than 2X as much as past presidents for all of their terms combined.

Amazing isn't it?

...

BUT:

JORDAN WILL HAVE TO SAVE 100% OF HIS INCOME FOR 270 YEARS TO HAVE A NET WORTH EQUIVALENT TO THAT OF BILL GATES.
