OT: Why does Fla BBQ suck soo bad?

cwegescheide

YOU have been ignored!
So I have been craving barbeque lately and have been to a few places. Sonny's (I'm sorry this place is a joke) And some place off of Gandy, close to Bayshore dr (not good) and some BBQ place on Kennedy NOT!!!!

So help me out! Where's the good place to get some really tasty barbeque in Tampa? Maybe its southern style down here or something but there is a few places back home in Indy that BLOWS AWAY these places I've been so far.

Thanks

ok man I can help. Sonny's is like McDonalds of bbq. If you dont mind the drive goto a place called First Choice in Brandon around 60 and 301.Just east on the south side of road next to home depot. He has the best food anywhere around. Some friends have told me that Alex's up around erlich and hutchinson is good too but haven't tried them. That's a little closer to you.

If you don't mind a little drive, go to Plant City, off Alexander by the Farmers Market and eat at Grandpa Johnson's... Best BBQ around!

Matt

I have heard about a place out the back gate of MacDill Air Force Base. It is supposed to be real good. I have never been there. I think it is called something like Kojacks. I believe it is off of Bayshore in what looks like a house that was converted into a restaurant. Southern BBQ is not going to be like the BBQ that you are acustomed to.

Georgia Boys and Boos. Both are in Oldsmar near my shop. Georgia Boys is kind of scary but the food is excellent. Pay no attention to the shambling mounds of debris. Boos has blue-cheese coleslaw and white mac-n-cheese sides that are awesome. Their ribs are good, not to fatty or wet.

It is hard to find good BBQ here. In no particular order;

Alex's BBQ
1st Choice
Hungry Harry's - North of 54 on Hwy 41, Land O' Lakes
Big John's Alabama BBQ - 40th St. a little North of Hillsborough Ave.

The last 2 are dives but most good BBQ places are.

Kojacks (that Boyd mentioned) and Fred Flemmings are the two best places I've been to. Keep in mind that I havent been to First Choice or the other small places mentioned.

Oh yeah if they are not dives they're no good!!! :D This place back home is in a REALLY bad area and pretty beat down. The BBQ is sooo good though. The first time I went there I made sure my door were locked and I had an escape plan (went the drive thru) Next time I'm up there I'm going to stock up on the sauce and make my own...

Thanks for the tips! I'll check em out :)

Only the best BBQ to be found will be in dives. Leave the fancy places to the lobster. :)

Kojak's is my old stomping ground! I haven't been there in a while. I have been going to Smokey Bones alot lately. Pretty good stuff plus I love their cornbread! Also depends on if you like rub or sauce, smoked or grilled...stuff like that.

Grilled ALL THE WAY!!! CHARCOAL under low heat in aluminum foil, smothered in onions and garlic till the meat is practically falling off the bone. Then take the meat out of the aluminum foil and apply the sauce , let the sauce carmelize a little and your good to go. Thats how I do my spare ribs. FOSHIZZLE!! :D

I'm so glad someone brought up this topic. I didn't want to start a flame war between the long time natives and the relativily recent transplants from the north like myself. Being from NY i've grown up with having the best of the best when it comes to food variety. I'll be trying out more than a few of the above suggestions. By the way, I was told by locals that Sonny's was great, and it was so bad I told the manager they had no right to even be doing business!!

Like was said earlier, Sonnys is good, as long as you know its the mcdonalds of bbq places....

If you're going there for a "good meal", you're mistaken...

It's about one step above a McRib! hah

I second

Hungry Harry's - North of 54 on Hwy 41, Land O' Lakes

I will have to check out some of the other resturants recommended. It is hard to find good BBQ in Florida. )-:

Any place do a mustard based sauce? I miss my BBQ haunts in SC.
