Sandy,

The blue LED light causes the coral reaction. There are kits you can buy for photography that include a filter for your camera and a light source and filter glasses for night pictures.

REALLY?????
what kind of reaction????
Ed is going to KILL me I just purchased two of the blue LED lights!

ooooh...

I'm happy...are you happy, Sandy? :D

Pretty pictures...

Thanks George,
I really enjoy the pictures as well....
I was happy, I am not sure if I'm happy now, not after what Lytehouse said :(

Honestly, I'm not going to worry too much about the lights...

We are off to see the Georgia Aquarium this weekend...

The best part for me will be having 3 of my grandchildren , and sharing my passion what the next generation.

My youngest granddaughter this is part of her birthday present, my oldest grandson and my oldest granddaughter.

I will also have a lot of extra hands, their Mom & Dad, (thank goodness)

Sandy,

Poor choice of words. There is no actual reaction of the corals. The led light just brings out a different color sprectrum, as you saw. George can give you a link to an explanation. I'm out of town. Sorry for the misunderstanding.

Here is a website for a product I use for photography when I suffer a 60's flash back... psychedelic, dude...

http://www.nightsea.com/

Lytehouse has seen some of the photos taken with the speical lens using the "flashlight" sold by Nightsea...simply awesome product and the owner is a nice guy, too.

Enjoy the aquarium! I always love taking the kids to the LFS, much less a beautiful facility like that!

Residue in the SW tank?

Residue in the SW tank?

Sandy,

There is a thread over in the Reef Chemistry forum discussing residue left behind from various salt mixes...

http://reefcentral.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=1652644&perpage=25&pagenumber=5

I do get a residue build up with Reef Crystals, which I used to just wipe down every month or so... it won't be that easy with the enclosed tanks..

Do you experience any residue in your SW tank? Do you clean the tank? What do you do, if anything?

I'm thinking it might be necessary to remove the SW tank once a quarter and pressure wash the inside... will that be necessary, in your opinion?

Thanks.

LL

I have seen this company advertise in some of my magazines,
There is an article in the June/July 2008 CORAL The Marine Aquarium Magazine... that talks about the fluorescence and bioluminescence in the reef aquariums.... Very informative!
This is the first time I have seen in person.

Thanks Bax,
Our grandchildren had a wonderful time, It was so cool to see their faces get so excitied and ask so many questions.
There is so much to see and do for all ages.
The older kids had a great time too.

We went on the "behind the scenes tour" It was AWESOME!,
(this was our 2nd time behind the scenes.)
This time we were not able to go on the cat walk over the whale shark exhibit, they had us standing behind a 6' glass wall, so no good pictures :(
They said they were afraid of the swine flu, and they didn't want to take a chance of contaminating the exhibits......
It was still cool seeing all the equipment and how they feed the inhibits.... they actually get in a small Zodiac boat and hand feed the whale sharks using a 6' pole with a large cup of krill. The whale sharks move the boat up and down the exhibit :eek1:
The staff was having a great time with the whale sharks. Of course we had a lot of questions, the staff was very kind and answered each and everyone of them.

I really wish I gotten some better pictures, I think only a few came out....

George,
We are getting the same buildup as everyone else using Reef Crystals...
We do clean the holding tanks about every 3 months using a little bleach and a pressure washer....
Having the union valves makes it easy to take the tanks outside for a good cleaning...

That's what I expected... my pressure washer will finally be taken out of the box I received it in Christmas 2007! :D

Planning does pay!

2007
Now that is planning at it's finest!

Sandy
I stopped using Reef Crystals as I was getting a lot of undissolved stuff in the bottom of my SW tank and what looked like rust stains. When I finished off what I had left I took the tank outside and washed it with bleach. I'm now using Oceanic salt and get no residue.

Alan,
We are going to switch to another salt mix as soon as we use up what we have in stock. I'm not sure what salt I'm going to go with next.
I really like not having to dose any additives with RC...
I have read the thread that Lightsluvr linked AGAIN!, I am wondering if RC is causing the GHA and other algae blooms in the tank....

I started using Tropic Marin, I was having the same problem Englishrebel was having with undisolved salt. I have to say so far I'm impressed with Tropic Marin.

Maybe me, too...

Maybe me, too...

I have two and a half 160G buckets of RC left - I may also gradually switch over to another salt mix when I get down to the last bucket...

LL

I hate to admit this, but I have 18 bags of RC left....
You guessed right, we buy in bulk...
So it will be a while before we make the switch.

No matter what salt you use, you will always find something to grumble about. That's the nature of this hobby. ;) Be sure to test each new box/bag/bucket you open to make sure it was mixed correctly, to protect your livestock from an accidental under/overdose.

What would you recommend testing for? So far I'm happy with Oceanic.
Thanks
