Our 450g reef, 360g predator tanks

Thanks Frankie!

I've learned a LOT since moving over here to RC. I feel like I'm really getting the knowledge now to make this tank into a masterpiece. :)
Cool! I am glad you are learning here. RC is packed full of experience and quality reefers.

Ammonia - 0
NitrItes - < .1

I threw five turbos in so they can start working on the dinos. Time to start water changes with RO/DI mixed saltwater. :)

I doubt the turbos will eat the dinos, but they will die and foul your water. NOT recommended for captive reefs! (except by every store that sells them)

That's the first time that I've heard that. I've seen them plow through HA faster than anything else I have in the tank, except for a foxface.

Where they've gone in the 450 is clear of dinos, including up on one of the rocks. Could they just be stirring up the dinos and adding them to the water column?

I have had some of the turbos in my 120 reef for close to a year. They're still alive and eating stuff, not sure what though. :)

Thanks Eric. It's been a battle for sure. I have the wounds to prove it. Mainly in the wallet though.

It's kind of nice to just sit back, relax, and wait now for some stability in the water... :)

I've started water changes with RO/DI mixed water. It's time to get the tap water out of the tank. I figure I can do a 40g WC each morning and evening. In 10 days I'll have changed out 800g of water. That should do it. :D

Turbos are temperate creatures. A few days of 81 - 83F and you can expect to lose them. They do mow down HA no doubt. But they also leave huge piles of turds. Keep in mind they are not exporting the nutrients, but rather changing their form. They also knock frags over.

Good point about snail turds. And for the stability of the water, it might actually be better to have the HA as long as it doesn't overrun corals.

Turbos are serious bulldozers. Even the rock structure itself better fit snug and tight.

I just don't like these brown diatoms that are all over the place. I'd rather have HA. Darn new sand....

Well, I might keep them in there for now and then get rid of them. I did catch 8 of the mini stars out of my 120g reef, kept them in water the entire time, and dumped them into the 450. Hopefully that will be enough to set up a nice population of them in the 450 before anything else gets moved in.

Howdy Booze! :wavehand:

Please feel free to let everyone know where I'm at in case anyone is wondering. :)

We're up to 120g worth of water changes now. I might need to actually start testing for nitrAtes. I'm sure they are through the roof at this point though.

I talked to Aquarium Obsessed today about the 2nd big tank and they certainly do have an attractive price. I'm looking for a 96x24x36 tank and would prefer a glass tank to house our predators. That should be big enough for them, don't ya think?

We have in the predator tank:
Cherry Louti Grouper
Picasso trigger
Clown trigger
Porcupine puffer
Snowflake eel
Ghost eel (we got this as a hitch hiker in the rock that had the snowflake in it, had it for around 6 months now)
Foxface

Thanks Booze. I looked back through my emails and I did receive a quote from them. Pretty good price too!

I haven't decided who we will order from yet. Heck, we haven't even decided definitively on glass or acrylic yet.

I did another water test:
Ammonia - 0
NitrIte - .025 (barely detectable)
NitrAte - 5
Phosphates - 0

Water readings look good but the diatoms are running the show at this point.

I guess tomorrow we'll do another 40g WC and see if that makes any difference in them. Might just need to sit back and relax and let them run their course.

I would go glass Terry. Acrylic is going to look silly next to a 450 glass reef imo. It will be so much clearer. I am shocked Booze isn't pushing an Elos on you. :) Miracles makes a sweet tank.
