Our Acan Collection

What kind of lighting do you have over the tank? I have a frag set up that I'm cycling atm, and I'm very interested in getting into acans. I have 1 enchanata or how ever you spell it in my nano, but I really would love to get some of the more exotic colors.

Also, on average, whats the growth rate of your colonies? For example, if you start with 1 Acan lord polyp, how long does it take for it to be 2-4 polyps?

One last question. :p Do you feed them anything? If you do, what do you feed them and how often?

I currently have a 4 bulb 24" T-5 DIY Fixture. I will be upgrading to the 48" bulb fixture.

On some of the frags I get a couple of polyps at a month, some do grow faster and some slower.

I feed a mixture of coral food and mysis shrimp about every three days

can you elaborate on what "coral food" you use in conjunction with the mysis shrimp?

Here is a list of the foods we use, I alternate them each feeding.
Liquid Life CoralPlankton
Liquid Life BioPlankton
Liquid Life MarinePlankton
Coral Frenzy
DT's Oyster Eggs
To spot feed I use mainly the mysis shrimp.

thanks for the info...what's your rationale behind feeding the plankton? is it to facilitate zoo plankton? always figured target feeding meaty foods would be sufficient for acan's

Some of the main reasons for us setting up the acan tank was to make it easier for us to feed, maintain the flow and lighting requirements for them. Also if I do not have time to spot feed at that time I can broadcast feed with the liquid food. I have also learned over the years that a variety of foods results in a happier healthier animal.

Here are some new top down pictures of our Acan tank I took this afternoon with Kathy's Coolpix camera just messing around. Enjoy.

Those poor Acropora, they just look so plain & lonely. Your classic wallflower at the bar or prom. LOL

Matthew

I also use the acan tank as our acro nursery tank, until I get our acro tank built. The tennis shown had a problem with STN a while back and I fragged the small colony I had to try and save it. I am happy to say that every frag recovered and is doing nicely, including the base of the colony that had good flesh left on it after the fragging. The acros are my wife's favorite with acans second, with me it is the opposite.

Thanks you also have a sweet set up yourself. Can you give us the tank specs or if you have a link to your build that would be great. I would also be interested in any other information you are willing to share, always love to learn new things in keeping my favorite coral.

That a C. argi and a multicolor you got in there? Ballsy move putting dwarf angels in a tank loaded with tasty LPS :)

Yes we took a chance and we have come out on top so far. My wife keeps them well fed and they show no interest in the corals. When the door opens to the greenhouse they are at the front corner of tank waiting for food. We also have a large Atlantic Pygmy and Lemonpeel angel in our vat with corals and no problems also. I guess it really depends on the personality of the fish.

poposherry just guessing from looking at the pictures is your tank around 75 gallons? What are your water parameters? Just wanting to compare parameters.

Well....I see you guys have the same addiction as me. Your tank is looking awesome. I have been collection Aussie acans for the past 4 years. Do you guys ever come across pure yellow acans?? I have been to many Aussie acan shipments and have only come across 2.

This is the best of the 2

Northenreefer0 thanks for the comment it is after seeing pictures of your tank gave us the inspiration to build a new tank for our acans. As for seeing pure yellow acans the answer is no, the closest that I have seen is golden yellow. Here I had to order most of my acans online since none of the LFS can't get the more exotic colors.
