Out of Africa (picture intensive)

A bit of a sad update on the 24th of May 2010 my flame angel vanished after no ill health.....I never found his body .....this fish was bought in July 1994 and had been kept in various aquariums until he spent his final almost 2 years in this last Aquarium.

An amazing beautiful fish with colour and personality to rival most other fishes.... i will miss him but am glad to have had his presence in my life for 16 years... this fish was fully grown when i purchased him... i suspect he may well have been over 20 years old!!
and so he outlived alot of my land pets.
Farewell Flame! You will always burn bright in my memory

Maybe even older than twenty considering the larval phase and all... but had you found the body you could have aged it by grinding down the otolith. That would have been sweet too see how old a fish that probably died of natural old age was, living in a captive environment for so long.

do you have more shots of the side sections to post up? It would be cool to see some sections of the middle that are half zoomed out or so aswell. somwhere inbetween a fts and full macro shots. i really like what your doing with the side sections, keep it up

Uhuru- thanks ...yes he may very well have been older than some of the forum members :)

Chingchai- Thank you Chingchai , we both share the same passion for marine life and your choice in fish and corals is Superb!

Auem.... yes alot of my fish including my French angel are very old not as old in terms of captivity as the flame angel but they may very well be even older than the flame as i have no way of knowing what age they were when they were caught and landed up in my aquarium. The French angel came to me as tiny juvenile with black and yellow stripes... still in his cleaning parasites from other fish phase and now he is at the moment the largest fish in my aquarium although the vlamingi tang is catching up to him fast, he is true pet and very tame....in my aquarium i have had him now for almost 9 years

rpjaws74 - yes they are very cool Triggerfish... i love their colours and the fact that one can tell the difference easily between the sexes ...they have been very well behaved too ... I have even watched them doing a spawning dance

Tcmfish- now if only i could have got those otoliths am i correct in assuming you count the rings just like on tree bark to determine the age? I do think he was a very old fish... but he kept going strong everyday and then poof just vanished one day

topn0tchlefty- Thank you for the compliment

Elliot- I do think he would not likely have reached that age in the Ocean being a small fish and that being a dangerous neighbourhood ;)

Khaosinc- Glad you found my thread i hope you enjoy it

frillcappa - yes i will work on getting good pictures of the side sections for you... those and the middle are all still a work in progress ... it is still a young aquarium only 2 years in July even though its residents are older coming from my previous aquarium...thank you

All I can say is WOW! I hope that one day I can have a tank half as large and spectacular as yours. Its very impressive and you have some stunning fish.

Yeah you count the rings, but you have to grind it down. They are oval in shape and you have to grind the oval down to a paper thin slice of it in the center to see the rings in a microscope.

TonyW121- thank you

tcmfish - thanks ill keep that in mind for the future ...if i am able to find a body

Cannon7 -Thank you-- i am abit passionate about my hobby

weirze- total volume is just over 5000 litres but it is 3 metres long and 2 metre wide

hector martinez- Hector thank you for your condolence... it is sad but not much one can do about the passage of time
