Oh just so everyone has a idea of scale here, the creature is about 3/4" long and 1/8" wide. (sorry I couldn't get anything for scale in the pics)

Thanks for the offer. I do have some Mantis pictures on my harddrive. I should add them to the ID page next update. Good idea!

cool. I did check the site trying to id that ;)

Um, so go ahead and use any of those if you want or like I said I can send you full res images. Otherwise just the additon to the site for future id's will be nice.

I should mention that I've used it in the past, it's a great tool. Thanks!

I just wanted to see if you could identify this little guy. thanks for that great web page has really helped a lot.

That could be a Strawberry Anemone, but I have a feeling it is Anemonia majano. Majanos are pest anemones that reproduce like tribbles and seek light. They will often work their way up the rockwork, and sting corals you care about. They look like little bubble tip anemones. They come in green or reddish-brown.

The green caterpillar looking things are Neomeris annulata.
The rounded scroll things are Padina.

i have seen 7-8 of these star fish they are all small ,none of the legs are equal and always at night on the rocks .they also feel like sand paper.my question is what kind are they and are theyharmful?

reef4ever, those are asterinas. Typically they are harmless, however if you see some that are bluish in color (in your tank), they may eat SPS corals. I had this problem in my reef tank and would extract as many as I could. The odd thing was in a bowl on the kitchen counter, they would appear to be green or brown in color. In the tank, they would look blue or white. The white ones are safe. The blue ones are the problems.

Eventually I just got a couple of Harlequin Shrimp to eat these guys, wiping out any potential problems.

So to answer your question, odds are yours are fine. The blue ones aren't common at all. Few people report about them, in my experience.

You should start a new thread about those questions, or read some of the already posted comments. Try the search engine and type in clean up crew.

Asterinas tend to eat the algae film on rock and glass.

Thanks for all your efforts in creating this id site. I was able to id the little creature in my tank as a christmas worm. It appears to be living in an abandoned tiny barnacle of some sort. dr
