Over aggressive kole tang (at me)

Idk what his problem is but he's kind of ticking me off to be honest. Everytime I get near the tank he is in my face literally whacking the glass with his spike. Hard enough so I can here the spike slam the glass and it is causing damage to his spike. I'm pretty sure he broke one side already since that spike is now sticking straight out and no longer tucks in.

He is passive with all the others including the other tangs. This violence is only toward me. Its immediately as soon as I get up to the glass and he doesn't stop unless I go away. I'm just trying to look at my corals. ?

Any ideas how to curb this? I'm tempted to try to catch him and remove and replace him.

I am not sure how to help this behaviour, I do find it really funny though. My kole tang loves me, probably because he associates me with food. Why don't you try feeding a small amount everytime you go close to the tank for a week, maybe he will then think positively towards you.

Wow, what did you say to him?

I've seen kole tangs suddenly turn on a particular tankmate for no particular reason, never their owner. Does he attack your hand when you feed as well? You could try the old mirror trick.

Tape a bunch of pictures of yourself around the tank to lessen the aggression.

:D

Seriously, I have not heard of a Kole tang being agressive like that to his/her keeper before.

My Spotted Kole is not fond of me.It comes at me when I go in and scrape the glass. He has not gotten me yet.

I pretty much do, I feed em about 10 times a day. :hmm2:

LMAO at this!

It doesn't come near me when I put my hand in the tank. At least not yet.

Really I'm more worried about his spike being broken beyond repair. I can't believe how hard he hits the glass with his tail. :debi:

This is a classic symptom of childhood tang abuse. It is a horrible thing to see.
I have seen many mentally disturbed tangs in my aquatic psychiatric practice. They come from abusive owners who either physically abuse them, emotionally abuse them, or worse, sexually abuse them.

Only months, maybe even years, of intensive psychotherapy and drugs will be able to curtail this behavior.

I can give you the address to my clinic if you would like me to begin his long-term rehabilitation under my care.

You lost me at sexually abused.

Heres a quick video check him out. He is non stop. Perfectly fine with all the tank mates though.

I'm thinking my wife trained him to do this so to keep me away from the tank.

Damn, you've got a Sohal Tang trapped inside a Kole Tang's body. :lolspin: I think I'd have to get rid of him.

In my first tank, I had a single, female oc. clown that would aggressively attack my hand anytime I tried to do tank maintenance or feed corals. She never bothered any of her tank mates.

I got her a boyfriend and she forgot about me lol

I don't think it's really an anger thing, I think it's just his Im gonna get some food dance. My La wonder does it too just not as bad,LOL. I also had a yellow wrasse that acted all its when I got near the tank. My kuiteri leopard hates certain colored shirts and freaks out when I wear them.

Does the aggressively decrease with more or less lit room? My tangs fight more with their reflection if the room is dark as it increases the mirror effect i guess. Maybe your presence in front of the tank is adding to the mirror effect and he sees himself more in the glass.
