Overpriced Equipment

If there are issues with conducting sales in PM's concerning the PM's being altered, the RC mods can see the PMs. I'm not sure how you could burn someone this way.

This is in reference to the sale rules here. Not reading a sticky at the top of the forum doesn't exempt one from moderation. With number of people using this board, not to mention the many Trolls who filter in and out I do see the strong reason for not tolerating the pointing out that one's asking price may be a wee bit high; this is not the common practice on the other boards I spend time at, and mods only police things the same way they get involved in any thread, if and when it gets out of control.

I don't understand this reference...care to elaborate?

Interesting thought and I kind of like where that is going. I think that might be possible software wise and will pass it along.

Just a further thought on the subject...

If FS threads were locked, the thread would quickly fall to other pages and not be as effective to the seller. Restricting the FS thread to the author only will give them the ability to keep the thread current with daily 'ups' to let buyers know of the status on the coral or equipment.

The "locked thread" method is used on a trade site I'm on and it actually works great. People over there use the search function to find what they need so it doesnt matter how many pages back a thread gets buried. Although over there the seller has edit persmissions on the thread to mark things sold

Personally, I think it is bad using a "locked method." Its far too easy for someone to alter a pm for the sake of burning someone. I've learned from my collecting hobby it is best to spell the entirety of a sale or trade right there in the pubic place record.

I don't know about that. I've probably done 20-25 trades through the local club without ever spelling out the entirety of the trade details right in the main thread. I'd actually prefer for details to be directly between the people trading because it really isn't anyone else business.

Another perhaps more important reason I don't like the looks of having a locked sale thread came up here just the other day when a person I respect unknowingly incorrectly listed some items for sale. Another member politely indicated why they thought the listing was erring. If the forum was a locked "want ad" type listing, then Mods would need to make reports of inaccurate listing absolute top priority, and a post stating that the postings accuracy is being challenged would need to be very prompt for the better interest of the members to be looked after. This leads me to yet again beat the dead horse about interjections about why I don't feel sellers should be free to set whatever price they feel without being politely questioned. The selling forum is exactly that, an online membership forum; its not an exclusive sellers listing. I feel that if I list my LE Aussie Ulta Bluecornwinker Kohler Special for $100 a frag, and a board sponsor is selling the same item for less, that it is entirely in the spirit of an online community that someone can make a polite post stating the exact item is being retailed for less.

also they can let the forum members and mods know that the sale is over, please lock thread..

The price of live corals is subjective at best. Some blame supply/demand, others blame the "L.E. Names". Not everyone agrees with it, but if you can't accept that some things may seem overpriced, this may not be the proper hobby for you.

As far as selling threads go, they are not left open so you can leave your own personal input as to whether or not you agree with the asking price. If you want to buy it; PM the seller. If not, move on. Simple as that. :)

I think I've been in this hobby long enough to know what things cost Johnny ;) I keep corals from at least three totms. I think you're totally missing my point, which is that the spirit of an online community is one based on dialog. Not being permitted to point out respectfully that a Forum sponsor is selling the exact item (coral or not) for lower, makes the forum a sellers forum in which its too bad for the unaware purchaser who decides to unknowingly pay more.

No different from buying from ebay, craigslist, or even another sponsor who doesn't have the best price. Not to say "screw the buyer", but if they can't take 30 seconds to do a google search for prices or are so impulsive they buy on the spot with no research... then there's nothing we can do to help them out becuase I'm sure this isn't the only occasion they aren't getting the best deal.

craigslist, ebay, frags.org, want-ad digest... aren't online forums, and we'll have to agree we disagree that respectful discourse even in a selling thread is what a public forum entails.
