Overpriced Equipment

I send this guy 2 message of the equipment I will have for sale but haven't heared anything from him so guess he is going to buy new. This is all high end equipment to.

all prices on craigslist are all over the place. occasionally there are great deals but some people are a bit delusional and I would wager than 90% of the fish tank stuff there never sells. and it's usually the FW stuff that is priced way, way too high. lowball it!

I've always preferred to give someone a great deal on equipment and get rid of it fast.

I look at the used price and see if I am willing to save X and forgo a warranty, return policy, unknown of its history, etc., if its worth it, I go for it. That being said, I still like to buy low, or bargain, it makes me feel warm inside.

When selling I try to offer items at a price that will make them attractive and help people out, I figure I have used them and the money I spend was for my use, whatever I get back is better than nothing for not trying to sell them.

Just wait and watch for a turnkey system on here. I sold my 125 rr with ALL the trimmings for 1200. More than half of what I had invested

I use quite a bit of used equipment and have saved a good deal by shopping for it.

eg:

litermeter 3 $100 like new
iwaki 100rlt 4 years old for backup pump $120
sieko 110 powerheads $20
Calcium reactor with regulator $100
ballasts for frags

Also relfectors and used mh lighting set ups and more. The equipment sales on rc are a nice benefit. It just takes patience and some shopping and of course caveat emptor is part of it. So try to know who you are dealing with or get some feedback on the seller.

I've been able to find some nice buys for what I call, reasonable prices. I've seen some stuff for sale, where I wonder, What is the seller thinking????

Myself, when I sell stuff, as the buyers of my various frag and equipment sales will likely verify, I mark it "Priced to sell"! I'd rather take a hit and get it moved, than hold out for a few extra bucks. It's not worth the aggravation IMO.

There is lots of good stuff out there at good prices. some people think its worth the new price, that's fine, then they can keep it. I sent a PM to a guy who was selling a Bermuda skimmer many many many months before I went looking - asking $350 - didn't sell it, put it in the basement, I sent a PM and he shipped it for $150 :) realistically he could have asked 200-225 when he first posted it and sold it.

most of my system was bought used at cheap to reasonable prices.

My only infraction here came when I threw my ¢2 into a sale thread that was getting some price questions, so beware. This isn't a home board where people are often allowed to give even helpful direction when their items seem over priced. Good stuff will usually keep a good price, but really good stuff has a much smaller market, and I've seen people who haven't been able to get anywhere near what their used stuff is worth. On the other hand people often perceive quality with cost. There is a lot of "stuff" in this hobby that people buy that even if it were brand new with huge discount I still wouldn't want. The search function can help a lot in trying to determine if someone's asking price is reasonable as far as the market s concerned.

My experience told me not to deal with people from Florida. They think that their equipment is just like their housing market was… appreciates every year lol

To be quite blunt, the majority of complaints we have are from sellers becuase people are offering them "helpful directions" ;) To you, you might think you're helping. To the seller, you're trying to lowball them in front of the whole forum. Honestly, dependent on the poster, it could actually be easier case. However so we don't have to put our own two cents in where it's none of our business (again seller's hardware, seller's price), we just keep this traffic out of sales threads.

As I said, any questions or negotiations on price are easiest to handle via a RESPECTFUL PM.

Oh, I was quite wrong; I quickly realized that and pm-ed fast apologies so soon as it was pointed out. I would have wrote myself up too.

In my opinion, FS threads should be more of a restricted or locked thread. Interested buyers should not have the option to reply, but instead should pm the seller.

Come to think of it, the only "new" thing I own for my entire tank is the 20L that serves as my sump, and even that I got at the petco $1/gal sale. Every single other piece of equipment is either used, or custom built by me. Maybe I've just been lucky, but I've really not had much trouble negotiating with someone if I thought their price was unfair. And most times, I've found prices to be very fair. Maybe it's just the stuff I've been looking to buy...

I agree with you Chris. PEople dont need "expert" opinions on a thread where someone is trying to sell their items. If you have the need to insert your comment, send a pm so it does not affect the thread potentially. Drives me crazy seeing people throwing in their two cents on for sale threads. People seem to have to rain on everyone's parade.

Interesting thought and I kind of like where that is going. I think that might be possible software wise and will pass it along.

Personally, I think it is bad using a "locked method." Its far too easy for someone to alter a pm for the sake of burning someone. I've learned from my collecting hobby it is best to spell the entirety of a sale or trade right there in the pubic place record.

On a previous note: turning right on red, riding w/o a helmet, driving in the left lane are all violations in different places; not familiarizing yourself with a State's traffic laws doesn't make you not guilty ;)

I don't understand this reference...care to elaborate?
