Owners Thread: Innovative Marine Fusion 40

I hope you aren't peeling off the black backing on the tank. I don't remember there being any contact paper but I could be wrong.

Nope, not the black backing of the tank as a whole. There is some brown paper on the back side of the display side (I assume to stop the acrylic there from getting scratched in transit). It's a real PITA to peel off. I'm going to try working at it with a magic eraser today to see if that's any easier.

Magic eraser was a bust but I got out a plastic scraper thing with an edge that works okay. Razor would most likely work too, but I'm afraid to scratch or gouge the acrylic.

For folks who have the Tunze 9004 skimmer, do you have a problem with the magnets not holding well? I was trying to set it up yesterday and the slightest nudge, like putting the cup back on pushes the skimmer out of position. I assume the little lip inside is causing the problem, do I mount it below that? That seems too low. I don't have any water in there right now so maybe that's the problem?

I had bought my tank used and thought the lip was something the previous owner had glued in place. I took a chisel and knocked it off before realizing it was part of the stock configuration. :hmm6:

My 9004 stays in place well though.

Hello All,
I am looking to purchase an IM Fusion 40 from a local fish store. I do not have experience with this type of tank/system. My previous tank was a 55 gallon with over the top overflow and return to a 10 gallon DIY sump/refug. I believe I had good success with my old tank, it was up and running for about 7 years in which I had the same pair of Clowns, Yellow Tang, and Yellow Watchman with Tiger Pistol Shrimp for the duration of the tank's existence. However I took it down about 6 yrs ago, so i have been out of the hobby for awhile.

Do you think that going from a 55g w/10g sump to an IM 40 is going to be more difficult?

Anything I should know about these tanks/systems? tips & tricks?

I am also planning on building a custom stand (cant see to spend 300 on one), is the tank/glass able to support a custom canopy?

Thank you,
Kevin

If you look thru the thread you will find a lot of info. The tank is easy to maintain you can put the equipment needed to run a tank skimmer algae scrubber filter socks all in the back of the tank. I bought the IM stand with the piano lacquer finish. My wife is very happy with how the tank looks in HER living room. I like how easy it is to take care of
I use a Tunze 9004 skimmer and a Santa Monica drop 1.2 algae scrubber with Marine pure ceramic bio media in the bottom section of the rear chamber. Will be adding the IM media reactor to one chamber to transition the tank to Aquaforest system.

I decided to take mine off on one side too because it was being such a pain. The only thing it's used for is keeping the filter socks on and since I don't intend to use those I didn't need it. Skimmer fits like a dream now. :)

I'm not sure if the fusions got new return pumps or what but mine is dead quiet. The cooling fans in my light fixture are louder. Very pleased with my selection so far!

My 9004 sits perfectly below the small lip. The magnets hold it rock solid and it works well at that level. the water flows perfectly into the skimmer as it was designed and I get really good solid gunk. When I first set it up I had the same question and anther reefer confirmed his placement below the lip. Give it a try.

I have been reading this thread for a few days now, only on page 45...
I have never had an All-In-One aquarium, so i am a little concerned with the amount or should i say lack of water in the system. Is there more maintenance than an aquarium with an external sump?

I am having a difficult time deciding on what tank/style set up I should do. I am interested in this IM40 but see that the display is only 30 gallons with about a 10 gallon sump. Would this be much different than my previous set up of 55g with a 10g sump?

I would do HOB skimmer and refug if they both fit to help maximize the water volume.

I would like to stock at least the following...
2x orcellaris clowns
1 watchman & tiger pistol shrimp
1 wrasse
1 royal gramma (or similar/suggestions)
1 dart fish (or similar/suggestions)
CUC (snails, emeralds, hermits, peppermint etc...)

would this little tank be able to support this? would the clowns over take this tank?

also, is it worth doing this designer tank knowing I am required (by the wife) to put a canopy on it? I already went ahead and drew up the stand and canopy for approval.

thoughts / concerns / advice ? -thanks

I stocked my IM 40 with similar bio load and no problems. I added a fuge (another 2.5 gallons) and I do agree that with small volume tanks each gallon will help. I've had one small ammonia spike when adding a watchman goby to the tank that already included:

2 clowns
1 six line wrasse
1 clown goby
8-9 hermits
various snails
BTA plus 15 or so corals

It stabilized quickly but it is a very sensitive ecosystem. Go slow and you should have no issues and maintenance is really easy. Very happy with the setup.

Here is my build thread and feel free to PM me if you have any questions.

Need help with brown algae!

Need help with brown algae!

Hi all!
I have been struggling with brown algae for months. It's gotten to the point that I think individual grains of sand are incrusted with it. Tank has been up and running for a year. This is my setup:

Fusion 40
Mid-size MiniMax Media reactor
Mid-size Ghost Skimmer
Mp10 wqd x2
Radion XR30W

2 Black Ice Snowflake Clownfish
1 Flame Hawkfish
1 Solar Wrasse
2 conch
6 snails
Assorted corals

Phosphate & Nitrates both read 0. RO/Di water from LFS. I mix salt at home. Using Tropic Marin. Feed flakes in am and 1/2 cube mysis at night. Lights running 9 hours total. Reactor has Phosguard/Matrix Carbon. Tried running gfo but it went through the reactors filters. Sock in place of media basket on one side and Purigen and filter floss in the other. I do 10 gallon weekly water changes. At one point I even took out 1/2 my live sand to make sure I got as much waste as possible when cleaning tank/sandbed. Any help would be greatly appreciated. This is my first tank and I have no clue what else to do.

Thanks!

Cut your feeding down first thing. I had some brown algae and then installed a 1.2 drop algae scrubber and after a month it was all gone. Add some pods to your tank. They feed the fish and clean up the tank. Use nutrient export and pluse mode on your MP10's to get the food out of the tank. Pick up a 9004 Tunze skimmer this will increase your skimmer output.

Are any of your snails ceriths? I just had an outbreak of these start today and my single cerith that came in as a hitchhiker has been chowing on them all day.

This might help:

Nutrient Export

What do all algae (and cyano too) need to survive? Nutrients. What are nutrients? Ammonia/ammonium, nitrite, nitrate, phosphate and urea are the major ones. Which ones cause most of the algae in your tank? These same ones. Why can't you just remove these nutrients and eliminate all the algae in your tank? Because these nutrients are the result of the animals you keep.

So how do your animals "make" these nutrients? Well a large part the nutrients comes from pee (urea). Pee is very high in urea and ammonia, and these are a favorite food of algae and some bacteria. This is why your glass will always need cleaning; because the pee hits the glass before anything else, and algae on the glass consume the ammonia and urea immediately (using photosynthesis) and grow more. In the ocean and lakes, phytoplankton consume the ammonia and urea in open water, and seaweed consume it in shallow areas, but in a tank you don't have enough space or water volume for this, and, your other filters or animals often remove or kill the phytoplankton or seaweed anyway. So, the nutrients stay in your tank.

Then, the ammonia/ammonium hits your rocks, and the periphyton on the rocks consumes more ammonia and urea. Periphyton is both algae and animals, and is the reason your rocks change color after a few weeks from when they were new. Then the ammonia goes inside the rock, or hits your sand, and bacteria there convert it into nitrite and nitrate. However, the nutrients are still in your tank.

Also let's not forget phosphate, which comes from solid organic food particles. When these particles are eaten by microbes and clean up crews, the organic phosphorus in them is converted into phosphate. However, the nutrients are still in your tank.

So whenever you have algae or cyano "problems", you simply have not exported enough nutrients out of your tank compared to how much you have been feeding (note: live rock can absorb phosphate for up to a year, making it seem like there was never a problem. Then after a year, there is a problem).

So just increase your nutrient exports. You could also reduce feeding, and this has the same effect, but it's certainly not fun when you want to feed your animals :)

Which LED Fixture

Which LED Fixture

Looking for LED clamp on lighting for low lighting SPS ( Birdsnest) and LPS. Which ones are recommended? Any under $300?

I am considering single Al Prime since since its only $200 and PAR peak is suppose to go down to 12" with spread of 30x30.

Any experience with Al Prime for this tank?
