Owners Thread: Innovative Marine Fusion 40

taat2d, I don't have any correct answer, but I would remove sand in small portions. I would aslo do additional testing as well. Second question if you set up again only 1 20lb bag is required? How is the caddy refug work? worth the investment?

Still waiting on the IM APS stand....

Thanks

Here is how I am removing the sand in my IM 40.
I am siphoning it out slowly over the coarse of a month with a large 1" diameter hose.
I used Marin pure balls in the rear of the tank so the biological filter is not disturbed but
I don't wan to get any thing crazy coming out of the sand while I remove it. So I am using a Magnum® Polishing Internal Canister Filter
An using Diatomaceous Earth to polish the water during this time

I am removing because I keep SPS and the sand is just in the way and I like to keep my tank really clean and sand is not helping. Also got some Aphasia living in the sand and have been eliminating them too by sucking them out. It is very satisfying killing them.:)

I think I'm leaving the sand. Lol. Don't want to disrupt anything. It's only about 1.5-2 inches deep. And I just got a jawfish. The caddy refuge is working out GREAT!!!!! Pods are thriving and the chaeto more than doubles in size in a week's time. Phosphates are zero. Gotta check nitrates this weekend. But... I've also been running phosban in the mini reactor as well. Not sure if it's one or the other or a combination of both keeping the phos at zero. Gonna try turning the reactor off for a few days and test again to see how the tank reacts to just the chaeto. I HOPE it remains at zero so I don't need to run the reactor.

I also just added the echotech marine battery backup for my 2 MP10's. Black/brown outs happen a lot in NYC in the summer. The battery backup will run both pumps for up to 36 hours if I lose power. It stays plugged in and it trickle charges when not in use. It came with wiring to connect up to 2 pumps. If I run one pump, it run it for up to 72 hours. Obviously the run times are less with bigger pumps.

The battery backup was a little pricey, but worth it in the event of a power outage IMO.

I probably would use 20 pounds of sand if I could do it over.

Thanks for all the input. Just ordered light so once stand shows up I can do caddy refug too. US in AZ need to worry more about heat, 120 next Tues. Plus a few 119 thrown in..... Lows upper 80-90 so I might need that battery back up too.

Wow I could never deal with those temps!!! LOL. NYC is hard enough!! Combined that with working outside all day every day and it's miserable!!! Unless or course it's winter!! THAT I LOVE.

I can't believe you still haven't received the stand. How long has it been?

It was first going to get a custom one, but LFS trying to get display tanks up. He was using outside source to build racks, fell through. So now he is building them. The New IM APS style are just not hitting the wholesalers fast enough, So yes its been awhile.

Thats funny most PHX residents love winter too..

Pics from today. Everything is doing very well. Added a swalesi basslet today...waiting for him to come back out so I can get a pic. They like the rocks....

I dose aminos and spot feed hikari coral food. It's a granular and I find it easy to broadcast and spot feed with it. 5ml of phytoplankton a week. Also use Larry's reef frenzy nano frozen twice a week.

Yes it's a jack o lantern

I'm about to get my own Nuvo 40. Does anyone have any recommendations for equipment or anything?

Welcome, and congrats. There are a lot of pro's for the Tunze 9004 skimmer, over the ghost skimmer. I'm going with the ghost for more flexablity. Plus the Mini Max reactor (GFO) If you go this route make sure who you are buying tank from gets you and IM preformace pack. Check it out at IM or MD. I'm going with AI 26 light. Again there are a lot of various opinions about this one as well. For me it was cost and controls. Also I'm converting first chamber to refug, using custom caddy and IM mag led light. Plus I really like the IM ato tank. I will be getting one of the new APS stands. Hope this helps, its a lot to take in, but review a lot of past post form others. Also a lot feel that the return pump is junk, some are replacing that too. Since I'm like you own tank and above gear, just waiting for stand to arrive at WS.

Can't wait to hear you process and what you end up with..

I was thinking of going IM for as many pieces of equipment as possible to keep it all streamlined. However I really love Tunze products so I'm sorta torn with what skimmer to get. I will need to get a stand. I think the IM one is way overpriced at $300. I could get another tank for that. I want to do a DIY one that still has a nice clean look to it. I have an old set of orbit marine LEDs that I'll use for the time being till I need a more powerful light.

Agreed about thier wood stand over priced, I really like thier new APS, check them out they are aluminum, pretty cool. yes they are $350. Will post pic once in. A few pages back will be good info about skimmers, and there where a few who did thier own dyi stands.

If you go IM, check out thier preformance packs. A lot of lfs aren't aware of them. look at ut at IM website in auto gadgets,

SUBSCRIBED! And new owner of a Nuvo 40, I hope to be putting together this weekend. Ill start a build thread as well but Ill be kind of cheating as I add some elements from a pre-existing 29g tank... Wish me luck, so excited to build an aquascape tomorrow that Im satisfied with.

Here are some more pictures. Tank is almost 4 months old now and I think about to really hit its stride.
