Oxymonacanthus longirostris - a week in review.

This thread has been a fantastic read through. I gotta say congratulations to you, Renee, and everyone else who is having such success with these fish. I'm kinda new to the hobby (about 2 years in) and have loved these fish from the first time I saw them but had ruled them out as not worth the risk (there was a beautiful one at a LFS that I watched waste away slowly :( ). I'm now inspired to try a species tank when I've got a little more experience under my belt and more room to do so. Thanks for the inspiration and the information. Good luck with these guys. I'll be tagging along this thread to make sure that all the fish keep doing ok!

I am so torn whether I should add tankmates or not. If anything it will be the seahorses and the smallest red saddled anthias. What do y'all think?

I have a lot of tanks right now, but I also have ALOT of walls. The new place doesn't have so many open walls, so space will be limited for awhile until we get the fish room built.

I'm thinking of giving them a 40g cube zoa tank.

I found getting them to feed isnt too hard, just a lot of patience and some prior research and healthy specimans and you should be ok however has anyone actually been able to maintain them in a tank with SPS with no problems once weaned onto frozen foods?

Has anyone had luck with weaned juveniles in a sps tank?

Cheers

Nam

I wouldn't risk it with adding anthias. I'd go with seahorses and some pipefish.

These anthias are not your normal anthias. They are even afraid of the seahorses. I thought they would get braver as they got older.... they did not.

I googled some pictures of them. They look very cool!
It sounds like they would go well with the orange spots. Let us know how it turns out and post some more pics please! :)

Just took some pics yestermorning and a video. I think the video is sideways though, not sure yet  but here it is with the pics.

there are a lot of these popping up on DD lately... today there is a trio already eating frozen!

So I guess 1 male and 2 females is ok? Anyway I'm hoping DD continues to offer these as I want to pair my male with a female soon.

I requested to DD a month or so back for these and they've been popping up ever since, but I still haven't got the chance to get a pair

Happy Anniversary!

Well, it's been a year since I picked up the female. They are in a temporary tank while we set up their new office tank and have picked up a new friend after we moved, our Red Saddled anthias. The anthias are mean to each other, but are very timid in a community tank. He looked at the filefish as was like "Can't I get some normal looking fish for friends?"

Wish me luck that I will be posting an update again next year. :-)

My OSFF changed colors today, and I have no idea why. He is in very good condition and is still swimming around normal and eating like a pig. His fins have turned yellow when before they were transparent, and all of his colors have darkened with the spots and mouth literally glowing now. The blue color and spots extend all the way to the end of the caudal fin. I'll try to get pics later but it might not show with the cheap camera I have right now and the strong lighting. The temps have been constant, but I did change the light schedule just a little and a couple days ago I fed him caplain roe. No females present to initiate spawning behavior, though he has always done the diving thing after eating.

Cool. I've seen the dorsal and anal fins on my male get yellowish. And the blue deepen along with a blue band around the snout becoming apparent. Never any color or spots on the caudal fin. Please do try to take a pick. Has the color change persisted?

Yes that is exactly what I see on mine, and with the caudal fin in addition to it. Why did yours change color? Its been like this all day. At first I thought something might have frightened him or whatever but he is otherwise acting normal. I hope this is not permanent because its definitely not normal.

Mine did it when I turned on the actinics early one morning. It was combined with lots of interesting pair behavior. Female darkened as well but not as much. Female also had a hint of the blue snout band but not as clear as the male.

Hey! Whoa! Speaking of crazy color patterns, I was up early today and took a peak in the corner of the tank where the files sleep. The one I could see had its "jammies" on and I've never seen that. A dark band of color running the length of the fish along each side. Bordered by two narrow whitish bands. And the rest of the fish kind of faded out. I've never noticed that before. Much to the chagrin of the fish, I took a couple flash photos and I think I got it. I'll put 'em up when I get home this afternoon.

Anyone else ever see their file in their jammies?

Cheers, small the alien
